Hey guys currently looking at 52 sundancer with the man r6-800s. Have not been able to find much info about this combination. Not sure what the cruise/top speed is, could only find specs with the qsm11 660 cummins..
This paricular boat has about 4k hours not sure if it has been rebuilt yet, awaiting the service history..
Are there any CAT engines that could be drop in replacements for the MANS if they are near end of life? I got a rough quote of about 55k ea to overhaul..
Anything in paricular i should look out for?
Thanks.
Rob

@rob954, a little more info on the year and location would be a big help with your question. However, if those MAN’s have been maintained at regular service intervals, 4,000 hours is nowhere near rebuild/repower time. Here in Florida, with a harsh saltwater environment I, see charter boats with 8,000+ hours on them regularly. Seek whatever service records you can get from the seller and have a qualified and certified MAN mechanic do a full survey on them.

Thanks for the reply sorry for my late response.. the boat is an 07 and is actually in south florida.. ive gotten newer ballpark quotes @ 20k per motor for an overhaul if needed.. found a certified man mechanic that will do the engine surveys and said it would take 2 days so im guessing its a very detailed process..
Video below of the engine room, sorry its not the best couldnt get the light to work with the particular zoom i wanted...

Wow - visually that looks in great shape. If they took good care of the engines and they were operated under their load curve it's easy to see 10,000 hours before any major. In commercial applications 10,000 to 20,000 hours isn't uncommon however commercial engines are rated at lower horsepower. I would make sure the bores are scoped as part of the survey as well as obtaining and reviewing the warrantee and service records from MAN.
From a replacement aspect and Cat's probably the C18 marinized.

Two days seems like a lot. Our MAN guy from Gulf Coast Diesel (associated with Marine Diesel Specialists in Ft. Lauderdale) did our survey in one day including sea trial. Computer hookup underway, etc. Didn't take the heads off, bore scope, etc. Didn't seem to need to, perhaps because the computer data was enough. I asked for and got a written estimate in advance.

$20K EACH seems high to me, too, unless he's making a distinction between catch-up and almost-rebuild. Our remedial/rehab work would have come in at about $26K TOTAL if it were only a matter of bringing the engines back into compliance with MAN service recommendations. This wasn't an overhaul; just the M1-M6/A1/A2 service points. I asked for and got a written estimate for all that, too, and the actual bill came within about $1K IIRC.

(Turned out our survey discovered other issues, too, so our total was higher; still wasn't a rebuild or anything approaching that, though. Ditto estimate stuff.)

I agree that sounds high, you should not need an overhaul if the engines were decently maintained, and the engine survey should take a single day. We bought our 2014 Princess with MAN R6 800s last summer in Florida. We had a very well known high end shop do the survey. When it came time to do the work, we hired a small shop that was highly recommended by MAN. They did a fantastic job, and the cost was much more reasonable. PM me if more details would be helpful for you.

The original poster said that he was quoted 20k an engine for an overhaul, that’s very light in my opinion.

The average 6-8 cylinder Detroit diesel is running 30k at a minimum for a major overhaul right now.

Looks to me like he said 55K each.

The fact that your asking about a 4k hr boat answers your own question. Unless your stealing it why risk it? Sure they can be rebuilt if needed but why even put yourself in that situation. It's hard enough to get anything done (nowaday especially) on a boat. Good luck though!

Crazy pricing…. This gives you an idea why….This is an exhaust manifold for Cat…. I sell it to them for $125. 65% material content…price if you bought it from a dealer
