It's been sitting for at least 6 yrs. I tried to turn it over with a 5/8" socket on the fanbelt pulley and its locked up. Is there anyway that it needs to be in "Neutral" or something that is preventing it from turning. I removed the plugs and sprayed "Liquid Wrench" in each sp plug hole and am going to let it sit overnite and try again.

Take the outdrive off. Even if it is not in gear, a drive problem can prevent the motor from turning.

hi, new here but i am going thru the same problem with my 1975 220 ov 233/351cid.
i just found this site and will try it if my engine doesn't free up. I've been soaking the cylinders for a couple weeks on the advice of local marine shop, (using PB Blaster) but still nothing. I even tried lightly tapping the pistons with a soft drift thru the plug holes each day a bit. turns out the boat had been sitting longer that i was told. went all the way from New York state to Indiana to pick up my "project". Trust noone! I would like to know how you make out with yours, i'm thinking long block replacement, but not sure if it's worth it. good luck to ya :)

I agree with what was said. I thought I had a bad 5.7 Merc motor on my 24ft 79 SRV and it was the lower outdrive that was locked up. My gauges would come to life in the accessory. position. But when I tried to start it, it would trip out on high amps due to it not cranking over. I tried to hand crank it also with no luck. After I pulled my lower outdrive off it spun and even cranked over.

Check the lower Outdrive first. I just finished replacing it with a good used one for $650.00 and I'm back on the water.

Good Luck,
John
