90s 270DA Windlass Retrofit II

One more question, how did mount your circuit breaker and contractor? The regular type breaker came with my windlass, but may get a round one that will easily fit in the box in the bilge?

Thanks

Mounted the one that came with it near the battery connection.

So things are moving along, this thread has been a great resource! Question, when you used the plywood for the backer, did you coat it with resin or epoxy?

I managed to get all the wiring in and working, up to the locker, I’m going to install the inspection cover next, then the reinforcement for the windlass !

Thanks again for your original post, it sure made things easier !!

We did not put anything I know of on the backer. It is not going to get normally.

I just re-read your post. where are you putting inspection cover? I did not install one. The factory way to do this is to completely seal the deck hatch as described and then cut out the bulkhead in the cabin bow area. If you look the mirror in the front of the V-berth is hinged on top and has a snap to hold it in place. We just cut open the bulkhead to get access.

I am doing as you said, in the bulk head behind the mirror, I am then doing the same as you for the hatch, just thinking I may coat the plywood with epoxy or resin so it doesn’t rot, it must be pretty wet in there. Where did you place threw bolts? I don’t see them in your pics ?

I believe the windlass bolts are what held up the backer. Do not remember any other fasteners.

Great! Thanks for all your help!

What I'm trying to convey and do not feel I am doing it well is that we made the windlass and hatch bolted through the backer a clamp to the outer deck. Which pulled everything very tight.

Doing it now I would coat the backer board.

Got it, thanks.

Getting ready to cut the bulkhead from the v birth to the rope locker, just planning on using a jig saw, is that how you did it?

Yes, hinged from the top, trying to be carful to not screw up the jousters where the hatch is going to go.

I do not have a hatch, we just have the mirror covering the hole in the bulkhead. The guy that I did the install with was a 30 year Sea Ray rigger and he said it was like that from the factory with a windlass. Not that I have ever seen one with a windlass.

Do you find that the cabin gets musty or humid from the wetness of the anchor line?

No, and I live with a human mold detector. LOL

My wife can smell that stuff and in a tight space she would not miss it. We rarely opened it, only when we had all the line out, my recollection is it seals down pretty snug. Also once the hatch door is sealed the only air would be fron the drain, so really no airflow into the cabin.

Just my take, your mileage may vary...

So here is the hatch cut in, stil have to seal it and screw it in.

Good eye, I will add a small filler peice behind the hinge. It will be tighter when screwed in, the foam behind the fabric is pushing it out.

Still not sure why you need it? Sea Ray didn't install one when they did it, so I'm told. My opening is much bigger, making it easier to check inside. You should be able to see the indentations that we followed to cut it out.
