ACs tripping breakers

1987 460 EC - All three AC units trip their breakers when the compressors come on. (I've tried each unit individually.) The AC pump relay is on and does not trip. Any ideas what's going on? All other electric systems working fine.

The boat has not been de-winterized - is there something that may have been done by the yard last fall that I am failing to understand? Seacock for relay pump has been opened. I've always had the yard take care of winterizing/dewinterizing so I am new at the DIY thing. Any pointers will be much appreciated.

is the pump working?
did you prime your AC pump?
older pumps breaks easily when ran dry

Do they trip immediately or after a while? Do you hear the compressors start to run? Do the compressors just hum instead of run when they try to start?

Help us help you!

Best regards,
Frank

Setting it up for you, Rob.

it take few minutes to kill impellers
compressor make noise similar to old refrigerator and when overheats (with no cooling from pump) draws much power that trips breakers

Sounds like your AC pump is air-locked. You need to prime it. There are a few ways of doing this. You can either force water into the system from the front-end, (the intake) from the back end, (the overboard discharge) or in the middle at the strainer or with an adapter teed into the system. I favor the run-the-boat method, which works of you have the scoop type of through hull intake. That's where you run the boat up onto plane and cruise it for a few minutes. I also run the generator and A/C so that I can check that it's primed without going back to the dock, but it'll work even without doing that.

First need to know if the breakers are 1)tripping immediately or 2)after compressors try to start and just hum, or 3) after compressors have started and are running.

Boatmail,
U having an issue too ?? or ur adding info that the original guy didnt post ?

whats with the raw water comment ? they can run dry..... as they do .....

Rob

old pumps had a rubber impeller and they were very easy to destroy
new style can run dry and electronic protection shuts down compressor - in 87 was not available - it was simple 120v thermostat
if breaker trips immediately - bad news- usually seized compressor, if not chances are that will work with repaired water pump
water pump on old system was always running with AC relay on and should push water before compressor kicks in
