Hi - I have a lead on a "new" '08 Sea Ray 260 with a 6.2 Merc. Wondering if the engine is big enough to avoid long plane, ploughing problems that others talk about? love the boat but am used to quick plane and low cruise speeds on my 96 Da240. Thanks!

Considering most people think the 350MAG to be "sufficient" I think the 6.2 would be even better.

Not sure about the "ploughing" problems you are referring to. The only issues I have heard about that generation 260 are a "top heavy" feeling and some planing issues with passengers on board.

The planing issue can be easily solved by learning how to use the trim tabs. Dont think the engine will help or hurt that but the 6.2 should be great for that boat.

I am pretty familiar with the 260DA having owned a 2005 model. The only engine that is adequate in my book is the 496 MAG. The 350MAG and 6.2 also get the job done but the 496 does it with a lot less effort. I had the opportunity to try both the big block and the 350MAG before I bought mine and the big block is what I preferred. Unfortunately I couldn't justify the increase in price which was substantial as I remember. So the 350MAG became "adequate" for me but still the 496 would have been the engine of choice. The 350 MAG requires at least 3600 RPM to keep it on plane so if that doesn't bother you then you should be satisfied with the 6.2 which may perform marginally better.

The 6.2 has 30+ more hp over a carbed 4 bbl 5.7 so I would assume it should be great. I replaced my 5.7 with the 6.2 and I have had my boat (one foot shorter, taller, but as heavy as yours) to well over 50+ mph once... Got very squirrelly at that speed and have had no desire to get it up to that speed again. I was running a BII with four blade SS prop.

The 6.2L is a great motor. My friend has a 2005 260 with the FI 350mag w Bravo III. He is very happy from what I can tell......mostly him and his wife. They do invite other couples for rides but 4 is the capacity they are comfortable with. My wife and I like the way their boat performs. My 270 would not be happy with a 350 but another 270 owner I know dropped in a FI 6.2L and they are very happy stepping down from the 454 yet stepping up hp wise and loosing some BB weight. My 330hp 454 Bravo 1 does fine but 365hp would be better. We always want a bit more don't we? I know I use a lot more fuel than the 260/350mag, Mike.
