I have an old 1989 220DA, 350 Mercruiser Alpha One, Gen I.
This weekend I hit something with the prop and chipped it up pretty bad. I replaced it with an identical size and pitch loaner from my neighbor. After replacement, I took it out in the river for a test. very little vibration, but when I accelerated, my alarm went off. as it was going off, I checked the temp gauge and it appeared to be at about 155,(normal 150). backed the throttle down and the alarm shut off. did this 3 or 4 times and then the alarm stopped sounding. Accelerated to WOT and no alarm. I've only been putting around for the past 2 or 3 weeks, so this problem may have existed for a while. the boat seems just a little slower, but I've also built up some growth on the drive and the hull in the past month as the creek where I keep the boat gets warmer and saltier as the year goes on.
My question is, does the alarm on this old boat only check temp and oil pressure? my oil pressure has never fluctuated since I've had the boat, including today.
I did scrub the drive today to make sure the water intakes were clean. the odd thing is that i run a 145 deg thermostat. the alarm shouldn't sound till at least 180? what if I have a higher temp thermostat, then it would always be sounding. When I accelerated today, the temp only went up about 10 deg. It still did that after the alarm stopped sounding.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

to simplify my question. Does the alarm in a 1989 monitor anything but temp and oil pressure?

I think thats all mine do on my '89 300 with Alphas. I don't have drive resivors so I think its just oil pres. and temp.
