Hi all,
I have a 1988 268 Sundancer with a combo electric/alcohol stove. We love the alcohol stove, but the plunger has worn out, and no amount of fiddling around will get it to pressurize the tank anymore. I haven't been able to find a source for parts on these units; does anyone know of an online supply for a rebuild kit, or has anyone krafty enough tackled a do-it-yourself rebuild with hardware store parts? the plunger is obviously not rocket science, it seems like there ought to be a way to fix it even if OEM parts are no longer available.

thanks in advance

They rebuild them and sell the parts as well. Frank is a GREAT guy to do business with. I sent my 21 year old stove in becase the burners were shot, the pump was shot and it just looked bad. I got new burners, new pump, new decals and now it looks brand new again! I found all the parts I needed, but decided it was cheaper to let them do a rebuild. It was!

I've never even tried the alcohol feature of mine out. We've used the electric feature many times, but never the alcohol.
I should take a look at it to see how it works, and give it a try some time.
What's a good source (inexpensive) for the alcohol?
It might be nice to cook on the hook!

Just make sure you READ the directions before starting it up! Some folks have an adversion to a 12 inch high flame in their cabin! If you aren't used to it or aren't prepared, you will think something is terribly wrong. If you do it right, you won't have much flame while it's heating up. Once it gets nice and hot it looks and acts like a propane burner. It's not quite as hot, but you don't have any fuel storage issues and the fire can be put out EASILY with a small cup of water! I love ours and have been using an alcohol stove for 10 years! It works very well once tuned for your altitude and the fuel you are using. I don't have a built in gennie and it's easier to use alcohol than dragging out a BBQ and retrieving the propane from the anchor locker (About the only place you can store it on the 300 DA!).

You can burn alcohol marked as "stove" alcohol(it's just denatured alcohol) from Home Depot or Lowes. It's cheaper than the stuff West Marine sells, but I'm NOT sure how pure it is? I get mine in Canada where it's called hydrazene or something like that. It's about $11 a gallon and I use about two gallons a season. It made specifically for boat stoves, but is just denature alcohol. We fire it up in the morning for coffee and in the evening for our normal meal.

Thanks Sundancer! I'm going to give it a try. Do you have any links to instructions for using it?

I used to have some instructions that were really good! They were enhanced versions of the above that were absolutely hilarious! Once you've run through the steps and have had a foot high flame in your cabin and you don't flinch, you've made the switch! I wish I could be a fly on the wall your first time!
