So was about to finish up my impeller replacement when I noticed im missing the “water pump face seal setting tool” see service manual image below… I think it was meant to come as part of the impeller replacement kit.

Can I manually install this seal… I’ve pull up on the shaft and push it down all the way (as in the pic below)… or should the seal enter the water pump housing?

Service Manual Image:

Manual Install of Seal:

You can, the install tool is just to help set it at the right height. The seal sits on top of the waterpump housing tight enough on top to seal the hole in the pump housing that the drive shaft goes through - to install without the tool lift up on the shaft and slide the seal down util it touches the pump housing. Seal should sit on top of the pump housing, not inside.

Here is a picture of one installed correctly:

That's how mine always looked on my previous boat. Never had the tool and never had any problems.

While it's not recommended to not use the tool, you'll be fine without the setting tool.

Typically an OEM kit comes with the tool while aftermarket kit's do not. Next time (if you didn't this time) buy an OEM kit and save the tool to eliminate the wrong doing feeling or run by a Merc dealer to see if one of the tech's has an extra one in their tool box.

Cheers guys for the help I went ahead and reinstalled the outdrive today... If only Jack Frost would lay off here -3 °c (27 °f) here in Ireland tonight

I haven't de winterize yet... Ran the anti freeze through the block and drained down by removing all 5 plugs back last October. If I were to take a test run with the night temperatures we are experiencing at the moment would I do damage?

I'm new to boating and this is my first season... So please forgive me if this is a basic boating question.

If I drain the block down again without pumping anti freeze through the system would I be ok?

I was thinking about installing a frost stat with a cut in of 4°c and fan heater in the bilge area or is this overkill?

Run it! Just pull the plugs to drain the water tonight - no need to run antifreeze through it. Really not necessary to do anything for 1 or 2 nights in the upper 20's, especially if the highs are warm.

I'd run it on muffs first to be sure it has good flow before putting it in the water. Filling the block with AF is mostly for corrosion protection during long term storage. No problem leaving it empty until the freeze risk is gone, just pull the plugs and be done with it.

Congratulations on choosing a Sea Ray for your first boat, you will love it.

cheers guys for the help. started up first time this season on the muffs all looked ok, good flow etc. with the lake 30 meters from my back yard I went out for a spin, temperature held steady at 170 so all looks good.
