i have a Lofran windlass. I have a chain and rope rode. The rope is spliced to the chain directly. I just bought 200' of double braided line. Do I splice it directly to the chain or is there a better method? A standard shakle won't fit thru the windlass. What is the most acceptable practice?

The only thing I can think of is to do a double braid eye splice with the chain link. I've never seen double braid as anchor rode but it should work....

I have a Lewmar Profish 1000 that uses 5/8" eight plait back spliced directly to the chain. The chain is attached to the anchor stock with a stainless swivel.

I guess I will have to splice it directly to the line. Am I the only person on the water with double braided for anchor line? I do know it is less abrasive resistant than three strand.

Double braid might not be the best bet for this application. Three or eight strand would be preferable. If you intend to use the db it will need to fit through the chain link. If it will fit just use a standard eye splice, but it may hang on the gypsy.

Sorry, confused. Why is double braid more likely to get hung up?

I just went through this on my new to me 98 290 SD...... the previous owner pieced together some crappy rope and a chain that was sized improperly using a attachment method that would not go around the progress 1 windless.

Bought all new rode 25' 5/16" chain and 200' 5/8" rope (original spec size) spliced correctly..... the windless runs so smoothly now with out jamming.

I would just bite the bullet and buy all new.

Even bought a new anchor because the one that was attached when purchasing the boat was sized improperly. It was a good hit to the budget but not having any rode jams is priceless.

what kind of prices did you get 200 or rope and 25 chain for? My splice sucks at going through the windless, and want all chain but $$$

You just wanted an excuse to buy a nice looking anchor! :D

Mittens - the most common cause of your issue is simply an old splice that is stiff and crusted up. Cut it off, soak and wash the rope, then soak in fabric softener, then resplice. Just a suggestion for a possible zero-cost solution. This is something that should be considered maintenance, so it's a good idea to do it every so often.

I pulled all the rode out and soaked all 200 ft in fabric sofener for 3-4 days. it still did not help.

I also have a new spring and a rebuilt finger (solid and no more grove). still just jumps at the splice.

and I bought a new anchor ha! i have bought 2 actually. Se Ray told me Kodiac, and it was wrong, then tried Delta, and it works better, but need a davis but hard to find.

I'd go ahead and cut it out, then. I do hundreds of splices a year so it goes pretty quickly for me, but New England Ropes has a good splicing guide/how to. It's really not that hard once you get going. Or, you might find someone around the marina that will do it for a beer and some conversation. It's probably just so well crusted/stiff that washing won't do it anymore. You could also flip you rope end for end.

my other end doe snot have a splice, it has normal end tied off fancy to the inerla anchor locker hook. But I guess you mean that will be fresher rope for the new splice.

My understanding was that double braid is not the preferred type of line because 3 plait / 8 plait are more "stretchy" allowing the line to act as a bit of a shock absorber. Double braid doesn't stretch much which means that any tugging in the line is transferred down to the anchor, potentially causing it to pop loose from the bottom. Likely not a problem in calm conditions when the anchor chain/line is sagging, but a challenge during windy/storm conditions when the line is already being held taught from the wind's resistance on the boat. That's also when you'd have more wind-driven waves to deal with creating tugging/shocks to the taught rode (chain or line). Hence why most people who have all-chain rode use an anchor snubber (be it a line or a true sunubber) to transfer the pressure off the chain and windlass to one or more of the bow cleats.

Correct. "Sometimes" it is fresher, sometimes not. It's at least had less wear on it.

Without digging out the receipt I think I paid around $400.... $750 total with new anchor and stainless steel swivel attachment.

yea for 400 I will buy all chain and ever deal with this, the finger, or crap again. thanks.

As an aside, if you have a Lofrans windlass, Imtra has pre-made/spliced rope chain combo rodes on their website. Some are quite reasonable. I just wanted to go with a long run of chain with 150' of my old line re-spliced on. I will rarely go past the 80 feet of chain now, but I nearly bought one of theirs to save the hassle of finding a splicer.

465 for there 200 foot rope, and 20 foot of chain... again thats the cost of all chain. I just will have to bite the bullet one day
