- 1989, rebuilt Mercruiser 454, 100 hours
Hello, I just wanted to show the very cheap things I have done to my 1987 300 Sundancer and I have lots of before and after photos of everything I have done. First off, this boat looked absolutely horrible to start with, it was an absolute eyesore. The gel coat was heavily oxidised so the first thing I did was polish the entire hull, that made a huge difference. Next thing I did was I painted my inner piece of the arch Grey, its was a faded blue earlier. Next I started to polish the deck and stern P.S. (Tape off any pieces of aluminum you may hit when polishing, it can turn your gelcoat to a complete mess if you touch the aluminum and can ruin your buffing pad). Next I was not sure whether I should redo the striping or remove it all completely. I decided to remove every piece of vynil striping on the boat other than the waterline stripes. To remove the striping I used a plastic scraper and a heat gun, all though I had lots of glue from the vynil left behind I had to get a eraser wheel (at any auto parts store) that goes onto a drill and it was not a fast process it was eventually all gone. Since this striping had been there for so long it had left shiny gelcoat behind so I bought some 800 grit sand paper and wet sanded all those places and then buffed again and the boat looked completely different. The next day I had received some stickers in the mail (Sea Ray logo, Boat Name and registration numbers) and I applied them to the boat. Last but not least I bought 4 new white plastic blower vents because my old ones were cracked faded and a different shade of white. These new ones were a bit of a lighter shade of white as the original ones and they fit right in place. Total cost of the blower vents: $30. That's it, that is everything I have done in the last 3 months. What are some other good ideas to change the look of our boats?
