Anyone have a garmin 168 sounder?

This unit came on my boat and seems to be in good working order,but im just curious about the depth reading. When I power it on everything works I change pages,it tells time,my location on gps,and the temp are all accurate. But in the depth box it shows --.- and no numbers. Im trying this out in my driveway on the trailer,does that make a difference or should it read a depth?

I have the 198C ... could it be that there is no transducer installed? Without one installed (either thru the hull or perhaps at the transom) the features you mention will work but no depth reading. If that is it (it helps) I have a new transom mount still in the bag that I can let go for a low price.

Yea the transducer is mounted at the transom , so it should show a reading regardless if it is on the trailer or water right?
