Are bilges supposed to be dry and clean?

My bilge is a hot mess, but you inspired me to clean it today. What's important is that you enjoy your boat and it runs...

Agreed, and, as I have a 250, and I only 1 arm there is no chance I am cramming my fat arse, all 230Lbs of it) down there to mop up a little bit of water, I would rather stay up top and use the boat for what I bought it for :).

Get a bigger motor. I can barely see down into that damned thing :smt001.

Very clean but but always something sloshing around down there after a long day out. Hardly enough to even pump out with the manual bilge switch. No worries.

I do realize you have bigger motors, but hey, if you can see the bottom there is room for more.

I'm with you on this. I can only see maybe foot of the bilge.

I was in the forward bilge today and i can honestly say diesels make dirt!Belt dust ,soot ,a small drip from the drain elbow, water condensation from the hull and changing temps. It would drive me nuts keeping it perfect so i keep it clean and as dry as i can, last weekend i installed a new water heater, seems much drier today,Of course its raining non stop today but still.

But am I going to run around screaming because each time I hose the boat down, I end up with a little water in the bilge, and grab the shop vac to vacuum up every little dribble? Hell no.

It's a bilge, it's occasionally wet...big deal.

I agree but you are a complex person :) This statement from the man who won't poop in his boat's head and the man who applies 7 coats of wax in the spring doesn't take 10 minutes to mop up water in the bilge.

My boat is 1 year old so it is naturally clean. There is always a small amount of water. I plan to keep it clean as others have mentioned. My previous boat had a greasy bilge and I hated it when I had to step on the bilge floor as it would inevitably end up spreading grease to other parts of the boat. Simple green works well.
