Looking to have my 2002 340 winterized by a reputable / certified merc mechanic on Long Island. Does anyone know what I can expect to pay for the winterization of the following;

Winterize (2) FWC 8.1S
Oil Changes
Westerbeke Generator w/ oil change
A/C System
Water System
Shrink wrap

Thank you

Not exactly in your area but for reference I paid $950 at the Sea Ray dealer to do mine last year. This included the 2 engines, genny, A/C, fresh water system, and head. All oils and filters were included.

Nice price. Its about double that for the exact same from the Northern Virginia Sea Ray dealer. They charge $560 per engine/drive. A/C, genny, water system are additional to that. Plus there is a $8 per foot haul out fee and $62 tow back to slip fee.

A boatyard or dealer would charge @$2k, but Mobile Mechanics tend to give you a break if you're having them do all that service, so I would estimate @$1,600. Keep in mind that some boatyards mandate that mobil mechanics pay them a "facility fee" for letting them work on their property, expect that fee to be passed along to you.

I'll give you an idea of what Marine Max charges as an example...
Winterize (2) FWC 8.1S 640.00
Oil Changes
Westerbeke Generator w/ oil change 250.00
A/C System 80.00
Water System 125.00
Shrink wrap 510.00 (15.00 a foot)
Total= 1,605.00

CP_71 was right on! :)

Dealers take you to the cleaners. They charge a flat rate for service items. They can usually winterize a 340 in 4 hours, but will charge you upwards of 12 hours labor since that is the total hours allotted for all the service items performed. I typically pay a mobile mechanic an hourly fee plus materials. This usually comes to $700 for everything, minus the shrinkwrap.

The $950 price I listed does not include shrink wrap like Bridog's price nor does it include hauling or storage. My shrink was $480... so now we are not that far off @$1,430.

$1500 to change oil on 2 motors, 1 generator and winterize everything, 4 ac units, 2 toilets, 2 showers, hot water heater and shrink wrap.

Another $250 or so to get ready in the spring.

Wow, these prices are making me realize I will be doing the winterization myself.

Don't forget to factor in the coverage of the risk into your cost analsys. You can be sure the companies that do the work for a living have to. I like it that if it isn't right they get to fix it. MM

Do not be too quick to jump to that conclusion.

I checked with the marina where I slip (major Midwest chain) and store our boat as well as another independent shop.

At each I asked if they winterized the boat then the engine block froze and cracked would they or their insurance cover it? Nope was the reply both times.

They both said years ago yes but not anymore and it’s in the contract.

I pay for indoor heated storage. I asked if the heat failed and a non-winterized engine block cracked due to freezing would they or their insurance cover it? Again, no was the reply.

I pay for indoor heated storage plus I winterize all appropriate systems for our boat myself.

I’ve taken some ribbing for the volume of poly pink antifreeze I use, 18 gallons to winterize our boat systems including, fresh water, black water, A/C, generator, 2 main engines, plus some various drains/etc.

I get this antifreeze at a local chain store called Fleet Farm. A case of 6 gallons costs just under $15/case. For $45 total its great piece of mind for me.

The label says it’s good for RV/Marine, has corrosion protection, for engines and says its poly G.

The big cost of winterizing once you know how to do it is the cost of labor if you have someone else do it.

I use 20 Gallons... Cheap insurance.

Thanks for all the responses. Had the winterization done yesterday, and these were the costs. I ended up doing the head and water system myself.

Winterized each motor ( fogging, oil change and spray anticorrosion) = $200 each - labor only
Winterized generator = $100
Winterized a/c =$60
Shrinkwrap ($10 pf) =$340
Parts
Oil $100
Filters $30
Anti corrosion spray (2) $30
Shrink wrap door $15
Anti freeze ( 13 gal) $50
Total bill was $1,125.

All in it took approximately 3 hours for the mechanic to do the winterization, and approximately 3 hours to shrinkwrap (most of that time was to create a frame). After seeing how everything was done, I'm very confident I can do all 3 oil changes and the a/c myself next year. That should save me $150/200 next year.

On a separate note, didnt mean to offend anyone by not thanking them after each post. I didnt think it made sense until I had something to contribute. Again, thanks to all for the responses --much appreciated.
