I've been spending some bucks on the boat to beef up the offshore capabilities so we could head to the Bahamas over the summer (as some of you have seen in my threads). Unfortunately, we've had a bad accident here with our dog.

I had a roofer coming over to fix some damage on my roof from a previous hurricane. They had to have a cherry picker to get to the top (12/12 pitch). So the roofer at the end of the first day is coming up my driveway and my golden retriever gets up off the front porch and goes down to the driveway and the guy in the truck plows over him. The dog tries to jump out of the way and he curves into the dog, he hits the front bumper, goes under the front wheel, and gets slow rolled over by the back wheels of his very large pickup. How do I know this detail? I have a video camera system that caught it all. The guy was also on his cell phone looking up at the roof driving pretty fast. He never saw the dog and he was in plain view.

Needless to say, seeing that made our family sick. The dog was rushed 80 miles from here to a special care facility and just had surgery. His back area was broken up (pelvis and vertibre and legs) and they pinned together some of his bones. It will be a long recovery and we will probably have to put artificial joints in him later this year.

Anyway... looks like the summer will be taking care of a handicapped dog but maybe we will try and do some short trips up the bay and hit the get together in Baltimore. My boat will be the one with the big antennas and new electronics....

If you thought boating was expensive... you should see what this stuff costs...

WOW!!!!...sorry to hear about your lab....These 4 legged pups sure have a way of getting into our hearts....our little girl, who was supposed to be for the admiral and my daughter, is deeply inbedded in the center of my heart....she's laying right next to me on the couch as I'm typing here on the laptop...

Hope to see you in BIH later in the season....with your well healed buddy....

good luck....

Gary, I feel so sorry for you and your family. As already stated it is
amazing how these 4 legged furry things can become such a part of the family. Tonite when we say prayers a special one will be said for your very loved friend. JC

Gary,
Real sorry to hear about that. Tuesday night our beloved 5 year old male golden retriever had a seizure. Not the first time, but we thought we had it under control. Vets can't figure it out. The tough part was that the 5 and 2 year old boys were standing there when Lance seized. Scared the heck out of them. So here I am getting the dog in a position that he can't hurt himself, all the while the two year old is asking if the dog is sick. It is amazing how close we get to these four legged companions.
Best of luck.

Our 9 and a half year old Golden named Bo had to be put down on 9/11 (hell of a date) due to lung cancer. It hits so quick we weren't prepared. It still hurts, hard to look at his pictures or any other Golden. :smt009

Gary:
I am saddened to hear that.
I am relieved to not see any "why would you spend money on that?" posts. As boat Owners, our view on what is important in life is already about more than economics. Clearly, you have a great handle on things.

Gary,

I'm very sorry to hear about the accident. Pets -- especially dogs -- become such an integral part of your family that it's very difficult to see him lying there. Our dog was very ill when he was about a year old and I remember very well how helpless it makes you feel. Best of luck and we'll be thinking of you and your family.

Jeff

I just got hit for 6k for one of my dogs a few months ago, only a dog owner could justify it.

They ARE man's best friend- no matter what happened that day they greet you shaking thier whole body and tail, licking your face- nothing else is as loyal.

best of luck to you and yours.

................Gary, first--thank you for posting your situation. Secondly, thank you for confiding in a group of us which, essentially, are your cyber-friends, but in fact we are not. We are a community/internet neighborhood with similar interests and in my case closer to you & everyone else here than the guy living 40' next to me.
Sorry for the injury to your "family". Hopefully everything works out OK.
Best wishes from the Olasons!

Gary, keep us posted on the progress. It sounds like the internal organs are ok right? I bet the guy feels lower than a snakes belly in a wagon rut...frickin cell phones anyway....hang in there

Gary,
Our hearts go out to "your best friend" and your family.
We wish him a speedy recovery.
(We have 2 Labs, a yellow and a black, who are 8 year old brothers.)
Best wishes to you all...

This was my friend for live....
He passed away last summer.

Gary,

Will the drivers insurance help with some of the expenses? Just a thought.

I lost my two labs in just less than four weeks this winter. The yellow was 4 and got Lymes Disease and just could not kick it. I had to have her put down. The black was 13 and had a stroke one evening. I had her put down the next day. Cried like a baby.

Got the dog back last night... He's on lot's of pain killers and kept us up all night. BUT.. I'm amazed what they have done. He's walking, chewing on shoes, and happy to be home. A few months of work on the recovery but the doctor said he is doing better than he expected. Six inches further up the body on being run over and the outcome would have been different.

I'm tempted to post a link to the video here of the accident. Anyone who talks on their cellphone and drives (I'm guilty) should see this video. I won't do it again... shoot... I even send email on my BlackBerry while driving. This has been a big wake up call for me.
