Baltimore bridge collapse

A friend of mine is a Baltimore City firefighter. He was on scene all day Tuesday. He tells me that to the best of their knowledge, NO commuter vehicles ended up in the water. The MDOT police were successful in stopping all traffic in time. The 6 work crew members on the bridge were the only casualties. I assume that all of the vehicles that they found in the water belonged to them.

I'm not usually the first guy in line to thank a government agency, but MDOT truly deserves praise for getting it done this time. They are real heroes.

I appreciate the Brandon entity for offering to rebuild our bridge, but man... If Trump were in office... It would have been 10' taller and gold plated. Can we wait 10 months before we order the replacement?

My contribution for the day:

The NTSB released the following timeline of events, which are preliminary and could change as the investigation progresses (all times are ET):

  • 12:39 a.m.: Ship departed from the Seagirt Marine Terminal
  • 1:07 a.m.: Ship entered the Fort McHenry Channel
  • 1:24 a.m.: Ship traveling at a heading of 141 at about 9.2 mph
  • 1:24:59 a.m.: Censor data stopped recording, but audio recording continued
  • 1:26:02 a.m.: Censor data recording resumed
  • 1:26:39 a.m.: Pilot made a radio call for tugs to assist
  • 1:27:04 a.m.: Pilot ordered an anchor drop
  • 1:27:25 a.m.: Pilot radioed that all power was lost and asked for bridge to be closed
  • 1:29 a.m.: Ship was traveling less than 8 mph
  • 1:29:33 a.m.: VDR recorded sounds consistent with crash, and dash cameras show bridge lights go out
  • 1:29:39 a.m.: Pilot reports to Coast Guard that the bridge is down

The anchor drop allegedly did not happen.

Jeff, I got my information directly from a USCG official who was live on TV giving the report of the hazardous material on board.

I would hardly call that "ridiculous news reporting".
Sorry, been off-line all day.

I didn’t mean you personally, I was referring to the irresponsible reporting by the news media.

Reported yesterday that they pulled 2 bodies out of a pickup truck sitting on the bottom.

I believe they were part of the pot hole repair work crew, at least that is the report i heard. RIP
Yup.....thanks to the quick thinking Pilot and really fast acting MDOT only the pot hole crew was lost.

Eight workers fell 185 feet into the 47 degrees Fahrenheit water below. Two workers were rescued — one injured and one unharmed — and two bodies were recovered, but four people remain missing and are presumed dead.

All Latin immigrants working road repair on the midnight shift. What bothers me is because they are Latin ......they are almost invisible to the media.

May God rest their souls.

This is a very very sad story very sad, it did look to me like the bridge was just made out of toothpicks the way it just fell apart I've seen bridge damage before not on a scale that big but the steel just literally snapped like pieces of wood like it wasn't built that strong in the first place don't know the area never been over the bridge very very sad situation though God bless

I am at my father in laws in east Texas this weekend. He is a retired engineer, his thoughts were that there was nothing wrong with the design of the bridge, as long as it stayed intact. Once a portion was compromised, the entire structure was doomed. His only question was as ships got larger, they should have gone back in and beefed up some sort of guards around the base of the tower legs.

Like they have protecting the Skyway Bridge.

I have been over the key bridge many times. The loss of this bridge is a major inconvenience for commuters in the Baltimore area. Not only are commute times greatly increased but now drivers are forced to drive into undesirable areas to get to work.

Can't be any worse then the East River of Manhattan. And they dive there constantly. You know bodies and all.

I won’t be heading to Dundalk anytime soon. My sister used to live there and commute to Severna Park. I can’t imagine how much this sucks for everyone in Baltimore.

The cost to do the guard rail protection on all bridges that have heavy traffic would probably be very expensive. The cause is not the boat it is the poor condition of the boat it seems. It is like aviation. All is fine with a defect until there is an accident. If a non US airline flies into the US it must conform to US standards I believe. Does anyone know what the requirements are for boats entering and leaving the US. If a CDN cruise is stopped by US CG they are inspected based on US rules.

Floating with documents, there is no real inspection or anything. When it comes to our ports, were still in the dark ages.
