We have two de-humidifiers running in our basement and do catch a lot of water from the air, but how do we get rid of that musty basement smell???:smt089

Forced ventilation?

I think that works to prevent it. . .not sure how well it will get it out once it sets in.

You have a basement in your boat?

Do you have the De-humidifers draining directly into the sewer? or are you constantly emptying them out? It's best to have them empty directly into the drain.

Out of curiousty, where the dehumidifer drains, how would that have to anything to do with his musty odor??????

We empty every day.....

What drain...??? there in the basement......portable de-humidifiers.....the sink to empty them is 20 feet away....they empty into a pan in the back of the units that automatically shuts off when the pan is full..hi tech stuff :wow:

Yes, and you can purchase a $30 condensate pump from Home Depot or Lowes that will pump the water directly into the sink

You may be fighting an un-winable battle. I'm betting that the units cant keep up and even doubling its capacity might not do it. Im thinking you may want to look into stoping the moisture before it enters the basement.

Has the problem always been there? Have any changes been made outside the home that would affect how water is kept away from the foundation? Ventalation may help but running a fan that vents outside will help, but again do you want to run it 24/7 for the rest of your days? If the basement is finished you need to find a solution soon before mold sets in. Once that happens........well its not good.

The basement is a finished basement....We just bought the house, The moisture is the humidity in the basement air from what the inspector said, and with a fan running the musty smell has dissipated alot.....We had the basement inspected and there was no mold found, the de humidifier does not run in the winter as per previous owner.....we just have to air it out more with forced ventilation i assume.....

By going into the drain the water isn't sitting in an open container all day. When we lived in Mich I had mine going into the drain and it made a big difference.

In Michigan you either have a floor drain or a sump pump that you can empty into, I don't know what other states have,

You can also try running your house furnace/ AC fan all of the time. Especially if you have a dual stage fan. Whole house air circulation might help too.
