What Cranking Battery would you suggest for a 1999 454 350hp Crusader engine? My mechanic says Interstate. The biggest they have is a 27MXHD.

When replacing a battery it is best to replace in-kind. There are some important values. The amp hour rating, the Cold Cranking Amps (CCA), and the group size. All of these are labeled on the battery. The most important values are the Amp Hours and the CCA (there may also be an MCA-marine cranking amps rating on Marine batteries) Please understand! The group size has nothing to do with the rating of the battery, it is simply the physical dimensions of the battery. Frankly any quality brand of battery will do, they are almost all made by Johnson Industries and third party labeled. However there are some (sears Die hard for example) that are made in China. I use interstate, because that's what my local marine retailer sells. But I have used other brands. They all lasted about the same amount of time. The really important factor is battery maintenance. Using a good charger and not letting them discharge to deeply. If you are using gel cells or AGMs, charging is critical to battery life. Improper charging can ruin a new Gel or AGM battery. Wet cells are a little more forgiving but fluid level needs to be checked occasionally.

Great info. Thanks. My mechanic said Interstate so I will get the most powerful marine battery they have. My boat when at the dock is always on shore power so charger is always on.

Group size does impact battery rating. High cranking amps can be achieved with most group sizes as it is really a function of how many thin plates are stuffed into the case. Physical size - group size- does determine how much reserve capacity the battery can have because that is really a function of construction, and space/weight are needed. So there will be a group 24 1000 amp battery and a group 31 1000 amp battery. Both will spin the motor at the same speed, but if you are having an issue with the engine or charging system, the group 31 will spin it waaaaaay longer or many more times before depleting. Interstate, Deka, others are all good brands.
