I have an 07 240SD 350mag and my batteries will not start the boat unless I have the switch on both batteries. I even charged both batteries over a few days to make sure they had a good charge but still I need to use both to start the motor. Is this normal?

No, this isn't normal... I realize that you have charged the batteries, but have you load tested them? Or checked individual voltages @ the batteries?

an individual battery will crank the motor but not start it - like is just does not have enough juice to complete the job...

I havent tested them cause the boat is new with only 22 hours on it...I guess I will have the dealer test them since it is only a little over a month old...

thanks for the info...that is why I like forums like this ;-)

One more thing... Have you checked the water in the batteries?

Another possiblity is you have Deep Cycle Batteries rather than starting batteries. If they are Deep Cycle batteries, it's possible you don't have big enough ones and that's why you need both to start your engines. The thread below has a lot of good information on the two types of batteries. Deep Cycle batteries do not have as many CCA's (Cold Cranking Amps) as regular Starting batteries. If you have deep cycle, take a look at the specs on the battery label and let us know what they say.

Get the dealer to fix it under warranty. You should be able to start it on one. That is the whole idea of 2 batteries. One yo use on the hook (Radio, Inverter, Blender, etc) the other to have in backup in case the 1st does have enough juice to start after all the good times on the hook. Should be brand new batteries.

ended up adding about 1/3 of gal of distillied water in each batt...then put them on the charger...we will see how they perform Wednesday evening.

btw...both are cranking batt's...not deep cycle
