i had to cut my anchor loose this past w/e....i think it got stuck on a submerged tree...i tried to free it for 20 mins but could not...it was a Hooker flute style 8 lb anchor....it held very well on mud bottom lakes.....

since i am going to have to replace the anchor now would be the time to consider upgrading if there is a better type anchor for my needs....any opinions on the best mud bottom lake anchor?.....if the fluted style anchor is the best is there really a difference in the various brands of fluted anchors?....for example is a Fortress 8 lb fluted anchor that much better than a Hooker 8 lb fluted anchor to justify the cost difference?....

thanks...

You would want the Fortress FX-7 that weighs 4 lbs. if you want to upgrade. MM

+1 for the digger

AMAZING... no need for a chain, and if it gets stuck it's flukes reset when pulled from straight above and pulls right out. Its designed to keep digging deeper when its set.

I've been very happy with this slip ring fluke - I'm mostly in flood control lakes built over former farm fields - it's mud. This lodges in great, and always comes up easy from straight up. Plus, the plasticoat on it makes it almost soft, so if it gets banged into the boat on the way up it will not leave a mark.

The above description does not mention the coating, this model does....

Not sure why that is the case, but my slip ring does have the coating.

My favorite anchor is my box anchor. My lake is all flooded fields and timber, so it's also a muddy bottom....can't beat the box anchor.

Cliff,

I will second Mike's recommendation. I have used a Fortress FX-7 on Lake Murray for the last five years or so. Does a great job holding and is very light. Also, the FX-7 does a great job in sand.

Deltas are very good for some bottoms particularly mud and sand. We have a lot of those conditions where we boat and the Delta digs right in as soon as it hits the bottom. Add a little power in reverse and we are set for the night. Takes about 30-60 seconds to deploy and set deeply.

I use a delta anchor successfully as my main anchor. I have a guardian which is the economy version of the fortress as a backup/stern achor that works good.

If for some reason I lost my delta I would probably replace it with a guardian.

I really like The Digger - I purchased it from Overton's. I know a lot of people who use them on Lake of the Ozarks which is a mud based bottom.

+2 on the Digger. I have one that I used with my 240SD and it works great in all types of bottoms. I purchased my at the local Gander Mountain.
