Bimini Trip from 2008

Great pictures. How was the seas? What route did you take?

Looks like a great trip.
I'm curious what your route was as well.

We went with a group, 10 boats. Our route, well from Cape Canaveral, go south, when you hit Ft. Lauderdale-Miami area, turn left and head to Bimini. You know you are there when you hit the beach.

Seriously, we went to Ft. Lauderdale (Everglades Inlet) and stayed a night then we went over to Bimini. It is about a 2hr cruise, straight as an arrow. It is a 50 Miles trip, will a bow rider make it, sure. Would I do it, no. Others have and I know a couple that have gone on small boats.

Seas were flat, like a lake both coming and going, lucky if we had 1-2 ft seas. On our return trip, 3 of us left at 4AM and headed to West Palm Beach, fueled up and met up with the 48 Sundancer that was also going back via the ocean at Ft. Pierce. (the rest of our group trailered their boats to Ft. Lauderdale and of course went back to Everglades Inlet).

It was a great time and can't wait to do it again. Maybe we can get a group from here to go over.

One interesting fact, you have to watch out for freighters in the Florida Strait. They are hauling butt and you cannot out run a freighter. We encountered one at 6AM on our return trip, he radioed us, we replied and informed we would be turning to starboard to basically pass on his stern. He thanks us, wished us a safe trip and within 5 minutes, he was out of sight, hauling butt.

They throw up a hell of a wake btw, wake jumping in the middle of the strait was not exactly my idea of fun, so we turned well behind him. Some type of chinese freighter, actually hard to understand him a little.

Thanks again. Bimini Bay Resort is where we have talked about staying.

If you had a glass trip over and back, consider yourself lucky, quit doing crossings, and take up golf.
30 years of back and forth, and that has happened once.

Last trip to the Bahamas we did not have flat seas. 3-4 ft. on the way to the Abaocos, 3-4 ft. with 6 ft rollers on the way back. Every other wave went over the radar arch. Our boat had so much salt in and on it we thought we might have been able to mine it for sale.

This is the reason everyone says don't take a bowrider, seas kick up quick.

Hi Tom, my family lives in Orlando, Conway. We run to the Abaco's every year. This year we plan to go over late June, early July. We like to end up in Port Lucaya for the Junkanoo and fourth of July celebration. We tend to stay out in the Abaco's around the Double Breasted and Carters Key area. We like the snorkeling and spear fishing there. Last year we went to Bimini, AliceTown. Did the ship dive and some fishing. Great pics by the way. Brought back memories for me. Bimini Bay wasn't complete yet, so we stayed at Bluewater Marina. It was Ok, served it's purpose. If I go back I'll stay at Big Game because it's closer to town. Bimini Bay is so far removed from town.

370 Dancer, you are correct sir. I've never had a good crossing to the Abaco's, but last years crossing to Bimini was as calm conditions as I have ever seen. We crossed in 2-4 ft seas, fairly long duration wave period.

Do you take your 240 to the Abacos? Do you go with others or by yourself? Bimini Bay is a little removed from town but a golf cart gets you there easily and now that it is open, they have an awesome pool right at the docks, the new docks. Plus the Infinity pool, but we like the pool that was right at our dock. We will stay there again, guess maybe our group is a little spoiled....:)

Yep, 240 da. I started out crossing in a 21 cc. Never cross by myself, only with family. My insurance carrier makes me cross with a "flotilla", two or more boats with the same destination.
I admit the golf cart ride to Bimini Bay was fun. We went and attended a sales conference, to buy slips. Not to bad price concidering. But my first love is the Abacos. Heck have you seen the plans for the North end of Bimini? Whew, it's going to be Niceeeeee! I'm wondering what's going on at Old Bahama Bay at Grand Bahamas. It to will be over the top. Just wondering how the economy is affecting the plans.

Here's a pic of "FrayedKnot" in AliceTown at Bluewater.

I am also wondering how this economy will affect the project that are on going. Sometimes I hate the thought that they are destroying the environment of Bimini, Great Guana etc but the other half of me (the half that likes to be pampered at these locations) thinks those places look awesome and can't wait to stay there.

Wish Guana and Bimini could stay like they are now for a long time, but all great things come to an end, or maybe it is just a new beginning.

Hopefully a new beginning. I just hope the Bahamians respect the islands. I mean, they'll need to enact some sort of "watch dog" patrol, to ensure the "guests" respect the reefs. To support all the added tourist, they'll need to improve the sewerage facilities, and build infrastructure. I'm affraid that might be asking to much though. No profit in it.
