Rushing back to the ramp after fireworks. I actually witnessed one of these senseless acts one year. We sat back and watched the "show" at our local boat ramp. Folk beating each other up because they were taking too long to load. Didn't get off the water until after midnight but at least we weren't part of the mayhem.

Pray for these family members.

That easily could have been Boston harbor on the 3rd people running up on plane everywhere. Only one accident and no deaths that I heard on the radio but I'm sure 9,000,000 close calls that night.

We're fortunate in this area (LUCKY???) that we haven't had any serious accidents after the fireworks end. When they stop, we turn on every light on the boat and stay anchored until most of the boats are gone.

A boat sunk in our area and another took on water but was able to beach it. Not a lot of info in the paper but no one was hurt in either one. Sounds like rough water was to blame, they happened in a known bad spot when it's windy.

This is exactly why we don't go out on the 4th for the fireworks. We end up with a bunch of idiots who have no business driving any vehicle, let alone a boat.

DC police, the FBI, Coast Guard all have boats working DC waters, but there's only so many of them. I don't understand how anyone can run on plane in the dark. On the river we need the daylight to see debris, let alone other boaters. At night it's just not worth the risk of going fast.

Sad story. I feel for all the families envolved. Many FD and PD boats have been sidelined due to the lack of funds to operate the boats. Homeland Security only gave the departments money enough to buy the boats and operate them for one or two budget years. Now those who took the money and boats are finding themselves in a bind, they can't afford to operate the boats and pay the crews. So they put the crews back on the floor and the boats sit in storage. It's kinda sad

I don't leave the dock except in the dinghy on the 4th. We have an ok fireworks display off the Queen Mary, but its only about 15 minutes long so its hardly worth it IMHO to go anchor out for such a short show. Much more fun on the dock and it avoids the craziness.

We were out on the Beaufort River, SC one 4th and after the fireworks we were cutting through a tidal channel back to the Broad River between Paris Island and Port Royal. We are in a 16ft open bow and I can see the search lights on a sport fisher coming behind me. This guy must was on plane in a channel not more than 20 feet wide coming up my a$$. I threw the throttle wide open but the little 4 cylinder was no match for this guys twin's. He seen me at speed as he rounded a turn and literally flew past me as he hit my wake. He couldn't have landed in more than 2 feet of water but never stopped.

We made it to Broad River with no further issue and never seen then guy again. He must have made it to the landing and loaded before the little 4 banger got us there. That was the last time we were on the water for the 4th.

We went out today. Stayed on shore for the 4th. Been there done that a few yrs ago in an 18' Trihull. Nearly bought the farm from everyone in such a hurry. No thanks. Today was nice and relaxing.

OK, let me play devil's advocate for just a minute.....

How many of you can honestly say that you do NOT drink any alcoholic beverages if you are going to be driving your boat in the next few hours?

I'm the only boater I know that does not drink if I have to move the boat. The single exception to that might be if we cruise somewhere to have dinner, I'll have one beer or mixed drink at the start of dinner but then switch to iced tea for the rest of the meal. It's usually at least an hour between that one drink and when we return to the boat and often it's another hour before we fire up and head for home.

I'm not trying to be holier than thou, but would like to see more boaters follow my example.

I don't! I have way to may permits and licences I would lose if I did something like get pulled in ether the boat or truck

I drink O'douls

I don't drink either while away from the dock, everyone on board can drink, but I say when enough is enough.

Tragedy on our lake that we watched unfold 100 yards in front of us. We were anchored out in a cove with about 80 boats scattered around. A young man, 26, drowned trying to transfer from a float to a jet ski. He had drifted away from his group and a guy on a jet ski pulled over to him to bring him back. No life jacket, the jet ski rolled as he attempted to climb aboard and he never resurfaced. We watched the fire patrol and authorities dive and drag a small area in 9 feet of water with about 2 ft of visibility. After searching almost two hours they found his body. Some decisions you don't get a second chance at. Unfortunate stark reality that served as a learning lesson about lifejackets for my girls.

That is how I roll. Admiral and friends enjoyed their drinks while I enjoyed a good cigar and Coke. Then that night some really good bourbon disappeared at the dock. Mmmm...
