In a perfect world the admiral and I would leave our laptops at home and just enjoy an old fashioned book when we're on the boat. However, both of us work and sometimes we need to connect when we're at a marina. In my experience, many marinas have free wi-fi but in practice it can be a frustrating experience. Sometimes it's due to a weak signal, other times it seems the network is overloaded. Does anybody here have experience using a high gain wi-fi antenna or range extender/repeater when you're on the boat?

Your talking about two different issues. If you have a weak signal bar or two, then the extender will help you. If your service at the marina is overloaded due to all the kids streaming Netflix (my kids included!)... Then an extender won't help.

For me when that happens at our marina I just end up tethering to my cell phone. My plan gives each phone 10GB of data tethered. That does the trick for me for work....
