Both voltage gauges are pegged when you rev the port motor

Just re-powered boat everything bolted up nice engines run smooth but when I give throttle to the Port motor both the port and starboard battery gauge Will Peg out 15 to 16 V took her for a shakedown cruise for five minutes stopped lifted the hatch saw smoke coming off of the alternator Orange lugs after going back to the slip and trying to isolate the problem .if the starboard motor runs independently the voltage gauge is fine when you run the port motor while the Starbord is running it affects both gauges and will increase every time you rev the port motor ,at a loss right now on how to troubleshoot this I'm almost there I just want to wrap this up I need your help gentleman all advice welcome thank you
