The C80 on my '07 320 Dancer doesn't have radar. I'm thinking to do an upgrade to include it. Just looking for a basic system that doesn't require a complicated installation.

The c80 is out of production (by a couple of generations). None of the new radar scanners are compatible. You will also need a heading sensor to get GPS/radar overlay, compatible unit is also obsolete technology.

You have two courses of action; 1 get on eBay, THT, or Craigslist and buy some used gear. 2 Get a clean piece of paper and plan out a solution based on new technology.

The first course might yield an inexpensive solution. The downside is that I don't know how much longer the C Series gear will be supported by RM from repair standpoint.

At first blush the second course may be more expensive, but in the long run may pay off especially if you plan to keep the boat for a while.

I have the same predicament, only I already have the radar and heading sensor.

Henry brings up a good point.

As a $ point of reference, I bought a Garmin 741sx with 3G Digital radar last year for roughly $2250.

A used Ray radome will cost roughly $500.

if you need to keep the Ray, there is a site, http://raymarinec80.com , that may be of some help.

Could you elaborate bit more on the heading sensor? I've not seen that in any of the reading I've done regarding adding to t existing system.

The heading sensor is basically an electronic compass where the reference is the bow of the boat. GPS in contrast takes the locations where the boat has been and extrapolates the forward motion of the boat. If you stop moving and only have GPS, the boat icon may spin around although the boat is stationary because the boat has stopped generating past location data that can be extrapolated to a straight line. A heading sensor by contrast always knows where the bow is pointed regardless of forward motion.

To sync the GPS chart data with the radar image and have the image properly displayed, the exact heading is needed. Hence the need for heading data.

Early versions of the C80 firmware did not require a heading sensor to sync radar, but the later upgrades did.

I can't tell you if one will be needed with other brands of radar GPS systems, but it is a question worth asking.

Sorry I needed to add that radar is always pointed bow forward, so without the GPS data being locked to bow forward as well the radar and chart won't match up.

I would seriously consider selling the C80 and putting in something new. The radars that are compatible with C80 are no longer made - and spare-parts for both C80 and compatible radars are going up in price very fast. So if something happens - it just becomes more and more expensive to get fixed. As Radars have a lot of moving parts - it is a gamble to put in a new " old " radar.

As for heading sensor for Radar Map Overlay - you can get a combo Simrad GS25 or Lowrance Point 1 NMEA 2000 GPS receiver / Heading sensor for $180-$250 - which works with most NMEA 2000 compatible chart plotters.

Some chart plotters will do overlay without heading sensor - but only when you have a forward speed of about 1-2 knot or above. If you are at anchor the radar overlay will not work. That means you wont be able to use features like Guard Zones on the Radars.

If I was to put in a new system - then it would be either Garmin 7600 series (Available Feb 2015'ish)- or Simrad NSS Evo2.

Raymarine "new" a/c/e/gS systems are not my favourites at all UNLESS you already have a real " fishfinder transducer" from Raymarine. If you do - then I might consider Raymarine as their transducers are slightly different from everybody else's and does not work with Garmin or Simrad. (Garmin/Simrad/Furuno are interchangeable with pig-tail adaptor cables - where Raymarine's are not)

Thanks. Going to do an upgrade to Raymarine mostly because it'll fi better
