I would like to install some additional storage shelves in my forward cedar closet. Max size to be 24" x 24". Any suggestions on materials available. The current shelf (not deep enough) seems to be made out of 1/2" thick plywood with laminate over the top and oak trim on the exposed edge.

Thanks for suggestions....Ed

furniture plywood is OK and already has nice smooth finish

yes...I was looking at some t&g cedar planking but it was a little rough. I think prefinished (white formica) shelving would work and cut to side. Then trim with oak. Current thinking anyway.

If appearance is not the higest priority, Starboard works great. It is expensive, but I've used the leftover material for other projects. It's water proof, doesn't need any finishing etc. I've used a few times with good success. Also, that plastic coated wire shelving is good. I've actually used the wire shelving out of an old refrigerator to make shelves/gain some storage space.

I think some nicely sanded tongue and grove cedar with some reinforcing strips underneath would look good.
Redwood will even smell better.

good luck

OK....oak strips to hold up the shelves (coated w clear poly) and 11.5" x 3/4" thick cedar - 10 ft piece is $31 #2 grade or $70 for #1 grade or knot free. The damn lumber yard closed before I could get there. So next weekend....will post a pic of the finished product. The closet already has cedar lining so I thought I would keep with the theme. Get lots of looks carry down chop saws and such at the marina.

Finished the shelf project...used 3/4" x 12" x10' clear cedar board to make the shelves. The top shelf was the original shelve which was relocated to top slot. The next three shelves are full depth and the bottom shelf was angled and moved to allow access to bottom area (wet suits rolled up and hamper).

Used oak for finishing strip. Lots more room for my clothes instead of one shelve and a hanging section. Smells great too.

I'd stick with the same composition that's already there ... 1/2" marine plywood, oak nosing, and some kind of laminate on the surface.

Nice job.
Both staterooms in my EC have big hanging lockers, no shelves. Who the hell hangs up suits and dress shirts on their boat?
I'm gonna do the same thing and multiply the storage space ten-fold. Thanks for posting.

I used the cedar since it was simplier than getting marine plywood, cut it to size, laminate it and then install. If the boat was behind my house, it would be easier. But 2 hours away...too many trips.

Hopefully the cedar will hold up.

My 2cents, I'd use 1/4" starboard and a wood fiddle screwed/glued to the shelf ends as shown in the above pics by EKM. They'd be lite, clean functional and inexpensive andf look factory.

Does anyone have pictures of the closet shelves? How did you make the brackets that hold the shelves? What did you use to attach them? Did you make a template first?
