While hauling my boat yesterday at a busy ramp the cable snapped, I thought the rust on the cable was just surface my mistake.

Had to quickly tie off the cable to the eye on the boat, sink the trailer and gently get the boat up so I could hook up the safety chain.

Can I simply replace the cable or must I replace the entire winch?

Regards,
Tom

You can buy a replacement cable - or a nylon strap, is my preference - at any marine store. Instructions come with it, although it's pretty straight forward - you'll have no problems figuring it out - new one goes on the way the old one comes off.

Check your spring and thumb switch, while you're at it. You can order a rebuild kit from a store, as well. Either take the old parts with you, or write down the model of your winch.

I busted my strap and ordered one online, West MArine's didn't look sturdy enough so Igot a super strong one it was VERY easy to replace.
