Hey guys,

Is it possibly to leave the key in the ignition mode without starting the motor or is that bad for
the electronics?

I want to play with the configuration with my smartcraft gauges but without a running motor.

In my old boat (100 years ago) it was not good for my ignition electronics..so that why my question.

If the key only is on there is no real downside. However with the key and ignition switch depressed (to turn on sc gauges) the ignition system is energized. that will drain the batteries.

Will the hour meter keep adding on engine hours on a non running engine with the key on ??

Leave the key in the "on" position, but don't turn it to start. It will not run up the hours on your SmartCraft gauges, I just did this to configure mine.

Key in ON on a carb engine will burn out the carb choke. (or something in that area) it heats up to open the butterfly valve.
On my boat it also starts the engine hour timer.

Marco,

I have the same engine as yours in my truck. If I leave the ignition on for more than a few minutes (like an hour), it will drain the battery.

On Smartcraft engines if the ignition is on, and SC is working, you are running up the engine clock. However, the Mercruiser engine scan software breaks down engine hours into RPM bands. The bands for the 496 for example are 0-750 RPM, 750- 1500 etc. Since the 496 idle set pint is 800 RPM any hours in the lowest band have to be ignition on, engine not running, or the short period when the engine is shutting down.
