Has anyone had any luck removing the black rubber backing from the cock pit carpets when they peal off and stick to the FRP?

It took me a lot of elbow grease and mineral spirits to get the non-slip cleaned. I trashed that carpet and replaced with aftermarket advertised on this site (snap in carpet). Good riddance to all of that black debris that got everywhere.

As soon as I get this mess cleaned up that's what I'm going to do.

Thanks

I used Spray Nine and and a grill brush (not kidding - use it Lightly!) then sold the boat.

May be closing the barn door after the horse has escaped, but...

I use Armor All on the carpet backing to prevent it from sticking works pretty good!

Paint the back with a product called plasti dip. It will make your rubber backing new and not leave a residue on the glass.

I did this as well to get me though this past season... I'll be upgrading the carpet over the winter so just needed something to "get by".

2 cans of plasti-dip did the trick. Point of note though, do the spraying outside and if you can leave the carpets outside at least overnight to dry. That stuff stinks. I sprayed mine outside, but put them in the garage to dry... that stink found its way into the foyer and beyond. Other than that it worked great for my purpose

Re: Carpet backing sticking. Try paint stripper.

I recently picked up a used 270 sun deck. When I removed the carpet there was a lot of black residue. I tried a lot of suggestions from this site including my pressure washer. I then tried the gel paint remover that you use to strip furniturIe. I let it soak for about 15 minutes and scrubbed with a stiff brush did a second application and it worked great. Plan to recoat the back of my carpets with one of the products suggested on this site.

I used Easy Off Oven Cleaner. Spray on, let sit for 10 minutes, scrub with stiff brush, rinse, repeat. It took about 5 applications to get it all off, but it all came up with no damage to the fiberglass or the non skid.

I've had good luck removing the black specs with either a light duty pressure washer or a scotchbrite pad.
