I've been told that i have slight fuel leak on my port Cat 3116 motor caused by a faulty lift pump. Service dept. says new lift pump is $ 684. Does anyone know if this part is available as a remanufactured part ?
thanks in advance....

The transfer pump (lift pump) is part of the governor group. Yes reman governors are available and the ones I've delt with are in the 800 to 1000 $ range. Parts to rebuilt the transfer pump are about $25 from a Cat dealer.

A typical responce to "a slight leak in a lift pump" would be a complaint of hard starting. Typically hard starting from a fuel system leaking down on a 3116 is due to injector seats.

Fwiw: I can see you spending lots of $ on a lift pump and still have problems... Just sayin

Wouldn't he have had some advanced warning of a leaking injector seat ? I certainly am no expert, but I would think he'd have some cylinders dropping out when combustion gasses enter the fuel gallery, first at higher rpms and under load.

With an inj seat leaking, the fuel passage in the cylinder head will air up as the engine sits not running (syphoning down). The return check valve has an "O" ring seal and holds well. Unfortunatly the transfer pump checks are plastic and always leak a small amount just by there design. With a small inj seat leak and the engine running: the combustion gasses introduced into the fuel system will not be noticed as the fuel system can sweep them away. Typically the only symptom is a little extra cranking at cold start up followed by some missfiring before the eng smooths out... As the inj seat leak gets worse, the fuel system has more difficulty sweeping the air away and low power in the upper rpm range follows, just like a partialy plugged fuel supply filter... As the leak progresses, the engine becomes more difficult to start and will even miss at low idle.

Fwiw: trying to use an "I pad"... My sp may be poorly

I ran into a leaking injector seat on a friend's 3116 powered boat a few years ago, and we were able to diagnose the issue by temporarily splicing in a section of clear hose in the return line. While the engine was running, bubbles were apparent in the return fuel flow. This is an easy diagnostic "tool", quick to implement and low cost.

Good info MasterFab. Would be interesting to know what the op's actual operational complaint is.
