Wondering what the correct caulking is to put a tight bead around my stanchions, cleats, etc.? Looking for something permanent and non-yellowing.

3M 4200 is waterproof, pliable, and can be removed. This is what you want.

3M 5200 is permanent, as in really permanent. Not recommended.

4200 is the product you need. However, you do not put a bead around the stanchions and cleats. That is the wrong way to go about sealing them. Read up on bedding stanchions and cleats.

4200 yellows if exposed to sunlight. It is a good material and is good for bedding screws. (I prefer Life Caulk though). If the caulking will be exposed to sunlight I’d use Lifecaulk or 3M 4000.

As SBW beat me to the punch, I'll just reiterate some things. The proper 'sealant procedure' is to put the sealant between the two surfaces. Just doing it around the edge is a band-aid and you'd be just as good off by using tape. 4200 is also not UV stable so would be the improper choice for anything exposed. 4000 is UV stable and would be appropriate for anythig exposed (or not exposed) - especially as you really don't need anything "adhesive" like 4200 - although 4200 is not THAT adhesive and would be fine in this case. But back on point, the sealant is (if done properly) not going to be exposed. Products like LifeSeal or LifeCaulk are also excellent choices. Butyl Rubber would be the top end of the spectrum in terms of materials.
