Just a fancy muffler? What can go wrong with them? I'm just trying to understand my equipment.

Just a big sealed can with exhaust gas/cooling water entering lower and exiting at a higher point. Once it gets enough water in there the exhaust gases must pass through the water which breaks up much of the noise. There is usually a drain plug near the bottom of the muffler to drain for cold winter storage safety.
