Checking Transmission Fluid Level

This may be a dumb question, but the ZF repair manual seems to indicate for my transmission with a threaded dipstick you check the oil with the dipstick resting in the housing vs fully threaded into the hole. Excerpt of the Repair manual page attached. Am I reading this correctly, you just rest the dipstick so it's sitting on the housing and check the level?

Uggh! I've been checking it wrong. I just bought the boat this year and plan on changing this fluid/filter here before the off-season but this is helpful - thanks a lot for the response!

Valvoline Dexron III. I get it at Meijer or Menards in the 4qt jugs.

Dexron III. I get NAPA brand. I change every 200 hours . It has never got dirty or changed colour.
