Does a 1999 sun dancer 290 have to be out of the water to replace the circulating pump or can it be done in the slip on the water?

Flow should be minimal, just jam a rag into the large feed hose when you take it off the circulating pump.

It has 5.7L mercruiser stern drives with raw water cooling. There is no seacock value that I'm aware of, I think it just gets water fed through the out drive. having said that, scoflaw makes sense, if the water is feed from the large starboard hose, that I can stop the water.

All you have to do if possible is raise and secure the water feed hose above the water line. Make sure it's long enough to reach above the water line before you remove

This is the circulating water pump, not the raw water pump - no water is going to come when when you disconnect the hoses. The raw water pump feed connects at the thermostat housing, way above the water line. You shouldn't, but if you disconnect the hose from the raw water pump, just keep it above the water line or line others have said stuff a rag in.

Just as a follow up, ... I chickened out and just drug the trailer up to the lake and did the repair in the parking lot. Took about an hour, while I checked all the clamps on the bellows etc while it was above water. I determined it was the circulation pump by removing the serpentine belt for a minute and the grinding went silent, so I was pretty comfortable it was one of the spinning accessories. I could feel the rough grinding of the water pump pulley during that time. After changing the pump, silent as a lamb and runs like a champ again.... Thanks for the advise.
