I am replacing a Raystar 120 with a new Raystar 125 plus (only sensor currently available)
The tech at raymarine told me that I could splice into the existing wire at the antenna to avoid having to run a new cable.
My display is a 2003 RL70c plus and it has a simple connection to the antenna and another connection to radar.
The new 125 has 5 wires -R, Y, Brn, Grn, Blk, while the old 120 has only three including an unshielded ground, a red and a yellow .
Can anyone tell me how to mate up the new and old wires... I'm not planning to use the seatalk buss ... just want to get a gps signal from sensor to display.

Thanks,
Charlie

It's been few years, but as far as I remember I'vr used Red, Black and Yellow. It's actually not hard to determine what you need. Take the tester and find the positive/neg (red/black) and the SeaTalk should give you about 3-5v pulse (periodic jump), this should the yellow one.

The green gets combined with the red. The attached photo shows how I did it.

If you haven't taken the 120 off yet, it is hard wired to its cable. For your plan to work you need to have enough slack to pull the old cable out to splice. The 125 has a plug on the end of the cable that plugs to the unit. So you will have to use the new cable to make a pigtail to connect to the old. Personally, I'd just use the whole cable and not cut it in case I ever needed to replace the existing cable.

Connected the new gps sensor using the existing wire. led shows the sensor is working ok, but the chartplotter still has "no fix" and I shorted out the ST60 so now I have no depth reading either. Considering upgrading the whole system at this point.

Does this mean that you didn't run the new line that came with the GPS antenna all the way from GPS to whatever your connecting point is? If yes, I would try using the new wire. If you have a junction box, you may have some loose connections there.

When I installed mine, I used the old wire to pull the new one thru and new connections were done only with new wire.

Don't mean to Hijack the thread but,

I just finished upgrading my 120 to a 125Plus unit for NO FRIGGIN REASON AT ALL:smt013:smt013:smt013

I was getting a "No Fix" reading on the unit so I posted about it and the good folks that did respond said that it was probably the antenna.

Long story short, the unit had a wire unplugged from the back of it!!!

I know, I should have checked the dam thing first.

It just goes to show you the pounding these boats take. Anyhoot, I guess I'll just charge this one to the game. Just a little pissed right now cause I could have put that $350 into the gas tank.:smt089

Hey Kreole, some things are expected by the owner to be done and not questioned by us... kinda like the computer tech asking the owner to plug it in and then try turning it on... The 125 is a better design and the lithium battery in the 120 normally gives up around year 5-7 so you just changed it earlier than needed. Your fix should be faster too and the ability to use either NMEA or seatalk is a cool addition if you plan to upgrade outside of raymarine electronics...

Yeah I know Doug, I'm just kicking my self in the a$$ right now because I didn't even think the dam thing "could be" unplugged. Well, like I said earlier, I'm just gonna charge this one to the game, suck it up, and take one for the team. Next time something happens, because something ALWAYS happens, I'm going to really analyze the situation first before throwing money at it and ASSuming that's gonna fix the problem.:smt009
