Mine is 5/8", but a bit longer. I think it would hang below the water by several feet. Remember you want the elasticity of the Nylon, make it too short and you lose that effect.

It is if attempting to prevent line chafe. As far as abrasion to gelcoat is concerned guess we'll have to await an answer from someone more experienced with this question Dominic.
