Couple cruising the Caribbean for winter murdered.

... Tough crowd in here and stop remembering shit

I guess as long as you don't park your car too close to any boat's you happen to be captaining your ok then. :p

I'm just sad to hear that about a couple from Virginia that just were enjoying the latter years of their life.

Having their lives taken by 3 lifelong thugs who had escaped prison is just horrible. Allegedly the cabin showed "it was a violent crime scene".

I'm guessing they were on a mooring ball and the bad guys threatened them to start sailing so they could get away from the island.

Don't they hang pirates? If they don't we should bring that back for these three murderers.

My wife and I watch a YouTube channel with a couple who've been sailing around the world for over 10 years.

The only time things got weird was in Grenada, when thieves were boarding boats on moorings overnight.

Crazy stuff and another reason that I live in the country and boat on an inland lake.

I really do want to do the Bahamas.

The PO of my 10 meter lived in North Miami and ran over to Bimini on a regular basis.

That boat outriggers and a downrigger, had a freezer on the cockpit deck loaded with bait and a TV sitting on the wetbar. They would rig with Ballyhoo and watch football as they crossed over. Loaded her 13' beam with watermellons, used for tips (a real treat over there) and stayed at the Rod & Gun Club - when I sold her 2 years ago she still had that sticker.

My plan was to run that boat (after repowering to Yanmar turbodiesels) to the keys and the Bahamas.

Done the keys, the Florida Loop, and the west coast from Tarpon Springs south.

I realize the incident that started this thread was way, WAY south of the Bahamas.

What's holding me back is the exposure and NOT BEING IN MY OWN COUNTRY OF CITIZENSHIP, NOT PROTECTED BY THE LAWS OF MY HOME COUNTRY, and not being able to protect myself when away from the boat.

The worry/threat of a stolen dinghy, broken into cabin, or a life threatening incident is a bit unsettling.

I've read what Tom Mott and Grant have posted, and do appreciate their frankness.

Perhaps I'd be more solid if I had already "been there, done that"

Still, that trip remains on my bucket list.

Sadly the neighborhood has changed over the last 20 years when those watermelons were considered a nice gift.

BEST !

If your too unsettled on leaving the confines of this country the don't. It's that simple. But don't make a big deal about doing so when so many others have done this on a regular basis. I have done it many times from Palm Beach back in the day, so to speak.

The Bahama's are not Grenada, not sure I would ever even go there (Grenada), it's not the best island to visit.

All I can say is this, if your not comfortable going to the Bahama's then don't, because you wouldn't enjoy it being so uneasy. But you are missing out one of the best trips one can do with a boat from the states. Especially anchoring out off of a beautiful island. How many actually do this in their life time?

If I were you, I would join one of Grant's trips at any cost. It is truly a trip of a lifetime for most.

Geez ….. what’s going on out there

Not to be alarmist but things aren’t what they used to be.

Some good news.....looks like they did not stay in touch with their kids. Note to Irish Mist......get a goddam satellite phone:

If your going to travel in international waters, that should be mandatory, that and/or a Starlink for tracking purposes.

So I take it they found the couple and they are okay
Not sure of that. The boat was spotted in the Dry Tortugas by another boater who called the USCG.

I believe the USCG protocol is to confirm it prior to canceling the BOLO.

from the AGLCA Forum, by the way they are NOT listed in the AGLCA directory:

Why can't we deport them? I mean, I know that is the standard response - that we can't deport that many people. But they got here somehow, we should send them back the same way. Just escort them back to the boarder and turn them loose in Mexico.
How do you eat an elephant? 1 bite at a time

Ralph and Kathy were regulars every winter here on I dock in Harbortown on Hilton Head Island. I never met them but many of my local boater friends knew them. Very sad.

One of the suspects…… now this is how you treat criminals….. you just know that’s his leg getting stuck in the tailgate

Scumbags.....hang them in the town square and livestream it.
