A cursory inspection of previous posts didn't find any discussions on this, but I suspect several of you have already addressed it. When we pulled the 14" Panasonic VHS Combo from the front salon, we found an unexpected hole in the cabinet.

It is roughly 11 x 8.

I am curious what y'all have done with it...if anything. It strikes me as being newfound storage, but needs a cover of some sort. I plan to mount a combo DVD TV against the closet, so access should remain available.

JD - Thanks for posting the photos. I am thinking about doing the same with the TV. I had the idea of actually leaving the wood base and mounting LCD to a pole mount mounted to the wood base. please let me know what you decide to do. thanks

Just some ideas:

-- Incorporate a door, like your flush-fitting cabinets. Would have to be done just about perfect to look nice, though. I know I wouldn't attempt that, myself. But a local cabinet-maker would surely do a good job.

-- Maybe something as simple as a drop-in lid (like what is used on some galley sinks). Create a small lip on the bottom edge of the opening so the lid wouldn't fall through.

The lid could be made with matching fake wood.
or:
------ Paint it black, maybe put a Sea Ray logo (or your boat's name) on the top. The logo could be painted, engraved, a sticker or even an emblem (like on the outside of your boat)
------ Cover the lid in vinyl, for example black to match the nearby trim
------ Create a lid "template" and then have it cut out of temepered glass - maybe stained glass (get the family involved in the design)

WOW!!!!! Very creative

Or....

You could pull that piece out with a hole in it (the whole top piece) and use it as a template to build a new piece and cover it with Nuvacor from Restoration Marine and it'll match perfectly.... and not look like a hack...

Wow! Some excellent ideas. I'll take another look at the top and assess its' "removeability". Sort of like the beer commercial...simply sticking a flat plate over the hole is too light...and a customized etched glass insert with family input into the design is too heavy, but replacing that top entirely or creating another cover type could do the trick.

BTW, I cannot believe that poking a hole through the fabric for the cable was Sea Ray factory work...wth?

Extra storage is always nice, but, do you already have access to that space another way?

Looking at the pics a little closer... are those screw holes around the hole's perimeter? You'll likely need a whole new top to get rid of those holes (of whatever material you choose). You can then decide to install an access door, or not. If done properly, the door/lid could look quite nice - like it was meant to be there. Lid or no lid... it'll certainly look a whole lot better than it does now!

Hole in the vinyl... yeah, that kinda stinks. Couple quick ideas: There appears to be some screws used to hold that tan, vinyl panel in place. Maybe just put a matching screw in the hole. Is there some type of screw-head "cap" on them? Or, have the hole fixed by a vinyl-repair pro. Probably cost somewhere in the $50 range. Done right, you'll never know there was a hole there.

I did the same thing last month, but haven't covered the hole yet. It will probably end up as DVD storage, or perhaps a hidden storage area for backup booze. Currently, my new 19" is just standing there. I have the mount to attach it to the closet, but my mount, even though it is pretty robust, only has 2 large screws. I plan to add 2 plates to reinforce it; one inside the closet, and one outside. I suspect there will also be a bungee cord to keep the TV pulled back to the rear tightly when underway.

If you have other ideas, I would love to hear them.

Don

I cut and fitted a piece of 1/2" cherry to the size of the original top. It covers the hole and is held in place by the the black vinyl trim lip. I plan on mounting my 19" Samsung to this board, screwing in from underneath using the factory holes in the bottom of the TV base. I was going to go with the articulating mount but there are only so many possible viewing angles in that small stateroom that I didn't think it was worth the trouble.
