I had reusable air filters on my 400 but they have given up the fight. They have aluminum frames and a black, synthetic filter media that is washable. Where can I find these?

Thanks,

Jon

I stopped using the washable A/C filters a few years back because they really don't filter much except for the big chunks. The Dometic Breathe Easy filters are worth looking at if you don't know about them. They come in a variety of sizes, are very easy to install and do a phenomenal job of cleaning the air. You just throw them away after 2-3 months of use. We always had dust from the carpet fuzz on interior surfaces while running the A/C until we switched to these filters. They ended the dust and ended the sneezing.

If you are put off by the price of the Breathe Easy filters there is another approach. My wife's downdraft JennAire cook top has a metal grease filter. The filter media is very similar to marine a/c filters and the same thickness. The size is obviously different. Anyway, she broke the washable filter after many times running it through the dishwasher to clean it. I goggled replacement filters for cook tops and found several companies that will make just about any size filter with a metal mesh media filter including a nice edge around it. They are reusable, but don't filter fine particles-just big chunks.

Defender has the Breathe Easy filters. They are kind of pricey. $26 - $32 per filter, if I read it right.

Dometic's suggested replacement schedule isn't too bad:
  • Change the filter once every two months when living aboard
  • Change the filter once every four months when the air conditioner is used three weekends per month
  • Change the filter once every six months when the air conditioner is used only one or two times per month

They also have a document that lists the filter sizes for various AC models, here. Although they are odd sizes, you might be able to find a similar sized filter?

I'm sorry that's highway robbery !!!
At first I thought it was for a pack of filters. That would have been less objectionable. But alas, it's per single filter.

Then I thought about the manufacturing costs vs unit sales. Regular home filters are made in standard sizes. There is a pretty large market so the per-unit costs can be pretty low due to high volume. Marine AC units take a custom size that's probably not used for any other application. The sales volume is low so the per unit cost to manufacture is higher. That's going to push up the price.

It's not that I like an expensive item, but it's somewhat understandable in that context.

Yep they are pricey but they work better than any others we have tried. We also changed them just once a season in actual practice. We usually used the a/c 24/7 beginning in July to early August when living on our boat up north. So for us it cost about $25 a year to have a dust free, sneeze free environment. When you look at how they are made, they are very pricey. But come on folks, 25 bucks and the product performs as advertised. Look at the money people spend on bottled water. Now that is really highway robbery.
