Decisions - Boat Painted

We have had 5 boats from Fort Myers painted in the last 2 years in Charlotte, all quoted around $200 a foot. It is excellent work and they no longer have the up keep of a painted hull. With these new paints and the clear they put over the metallics I would not be worried about the red.
Thank you, this is good to hear, my friend who is getting his 44' painted was feeling pretty good that I was going there also, but I was only going there because HE was going there! It's good to hear of others who have seen good results from their work. It will cost me more than 6k, because I have to get the boat down there and back (so probably 160 miles total, 200 gallons, so 1k$ in fuel!), but I will just spend a weekend to take it down, then get someone to pick me up by car and drive back. I did find out it is not easy to get to, you have to go through a self service lock, which I had never heard of, always learning something new... Anybody can look at their work, I believe it is We Paint Boats on Facebook or wepaintboats.net Sample image download...

Have a buddy from St. Pete that had a '69 45 Hatteras. He would get it painted every 2 years. Looked brand new all the time. Those were Awlgrip days. Late 90's. We did the Post, with a yellow hull, and it looked great as well. No more waxing.....
Are you going to the Ft. Meyers/Port Charlotte guys, or someone in Tampa Bay? You have my attention. I got quoted 28,000 to do Beach House but that was top to bottom and the cockpit.
Port Charlotte guys, We Paint Boats, I am only doing rub rail down, and I think my friend is doing the same. I am not certain by any means, but I believe my friend said he discussed the top to bottom option (Atlantic 44' Trawler...), but the price went way up for the topside. I could be wrong, cannot hurt to give him a call.

We had Awlgrip on our 320. I don't know the difference in that and Awlcraft, but the Awlgrip was beautiful, bulletproof, and was as pretty 9 years later when we sold it as the day it was finished. I just washed it a couple times a year.

Yes, that's them. The owner was the one who came and gave me the quote. They no doubt do excellent work. The topsides, however, require a ton of prep-removal work paint, and then re-install, which even if I did the bulk of it still had the price around half the current value of the boat, so I'm still looking at wrapping the hull, and maintaining the topsides. I have a smaller boat I'm going to try the Fla HOT WAX snake oil on. Results will determine if I try to move ahead on that.

I’m headed down to get the boat painted tomorrow. Will post pics of the hull, it is pretty bad right now, since I skipped the regular 1k comparing/polish/wax once I made this decision! It will take 2 weeks at least.

Hope it goes well.

Looking forward to some before and after pictures.

In that pic the gelcoat doesn't look too bad. Do you have any pics showing the really bad oxidation?

How was going through the manual lock to get there?

It doesn’t but the bow always looks good.

I know pics lie, but from that distance it looks pretty sharp.

So here is a good picture of the before…. This is getting splashed just before the trip down on May 2nd…. You can see quite of a bit of chalkiness, even though it had a full compound/polish/wax AND some damage the previous owner encountered but repaired, but the color does not match…

As someone’s else said, bow always looks good. It was the stern and those back quarters.

Here it is when we picked it up Friday, in port Charlotte. Drove it back (3 hours) to Palm island resort (had a great time there Friday night), and then to St Pete on Sunday, another 3 hours, took the outside, almost smooth as glass, we left at 8:30, got back at 11:30 on Saturday. Previous pics are from Sunday with friends…
