Actually, plastic is not plastic. Starboard has a UV inhibitor that will not bleach out the material in the sun. The stuff you buy at home depot does not have this UV inhibitor and hence will tend to deteriorate in the sun very quickly. PVC is plastic and does not last very long in the sun here in FL although Starboard will last a much much longer time. You will also want to be careful about salt water bleaching out non-marine environment materials. Just my .02

Fair enough, but my davits are not permanently installed, and when they are installed, the shade provided by the dinghy would protect from UV. Also, I'm not in salt water so no worries there.

I've been noodling on a cool mod that may solve the main problem I have with the Hurley's in my application. The problem is that the height of the swim platform renders the davits fully vertical when deployed down, making it difficult to slide the dinghy up the davits. What if I took the Dom approach and made two independent davit arms that could be shaped in such a way that they would come to rest on an angle rather than vertical? I could use the existing Hurley mounts as the pivot point. Hmmmmm, I may need to try that.

    Off to Lowes!

I put 'plastic' in quotes, because it's not really 'plastic'. The composite 'stuff' at home depot is made for outdoor use....the same like the 'plastic' fences. My 'plastic' fence has been up since 1998 and it still looks like the day it was born.

I going to make own "pull on" davits now.
After extensive research, finally I decided to use so called PE-LD (polyethylene - low density)

The reason are various (see here: http://www.ides.com/generics/PE/PE_overview.htm
But most important is the specific gravity. of 0.93.
    So it float in water:smt001

I made my drawings already in a CAD programm. I going to Waterjet cutting.
The bracket on swimplattform will be from the same material.

I'll keep you updated and will put pics here once it is finsished.

    Hello Dom

Excellent davits - wish I had the talent to make them myself - but I purchased the Nautley davits. I own a 1996 Sea Ray 370 Dancer. My queston - do you run your boat with your dinghy and motor attached? I don't feel real comfortable about the engine attached to the dinghy

    Thanks!

    Ron

Nope....I use one tie down strap on the bow of the Dinghy....utilizing the two D-rings that came with the dink and I added two eye bolts to the dinghy's transom for a second tie down strap. I generally run with a cover on the dink and, of course, the dinks plug removed. I'll look for a pic....

    Hello Uwe,

    Your dingy's look great!
It's a mix between the Dom's and PMvdb Dinghy concept!

    Where is your boat located?
It's not in Germany, when I look to the photo's.

Did you ever been in The Netherlands with your boat?

    Peter.

    Re: Dinghy Davit update!!

Had to add some rollers to my davits, it was too difficult pulling the dink and motor up together, slao added two ss bow u bolts to the edge of the platform for tie down points works much better now.
