If your drives are original then they are Gen I, Gen II didn't come out till 92-93 I believe. If you have a good picture I could tell you. Our you can just call a Merc dealer with your drive serial number.

There are physical differences. You can tell at some of the parts web sites. The Gen 2 is a more robust drive. Most of the differences are in the upper assembly (i.e. the space between the rams and top cap size) You can't go by the fact that is has a fluid reservoir or not because the first few years did not have them. I had a 1990 Chaparral that had a Gen 2. From what I understand, that was not the first year.

Just to clarify Gen II drives were first introduced in 1991, but very few were actually installed on 1991 model boats because manufactures were using up there left over Gen I inventory for most 1991 and into 1992 model years.

Thanks guys. I will check out the websites and compare to what I have. The websites will be a big help.

I think the impellor/waterpump kits have both Gen I and Gen II parts. I have seen this with quicksilver and seirra parts. Something to look at anyway.
