I have my boat in dry stack, always had bigger boats in wet slips before this one. Just wanted to see if anyone else had this issue. Went to wash and wax today and there is residue from the forklift skids on the bottom, no damage, but pretty heavy residue. Pretty hard to get off. Is this part of life with drystack or should I talk to management about cleaning this?

I never had a problem like that when I was in drystack. I have been in three different places in three different states with 3 different boats over the years. The skids were always covered with some product. They were never black rubber.

We are dry stacked too. We occaisonally get "fork rash" on the bottom also. It is easy to remove with a little compound and a buffer, so I don't make much of a stink. What is weird is that the forks are white, but they always leave black marks...I always keep in mind that dry stack staff are the "trustees" of my boat, and I don't want them pissed at me, so I don't sweat the small stuff. I also make it a point to get to know everyone at the beginning of the season. In return, they take good care of us and our boat and own up when they break something.

That's kind of what I was thinking as well. Not worth making them mad.

You shouldn't get black marks.

The only way you get them is when the forklift driver slides the fork on the boat.......mast not all the way down and drives under the hull, starts backing out before the boat is seated on the rack, moving the forks laterally with the boats weight on the fork, etc. It is an operator controlled situation and can be avoided if the drivers are properly trained and supervised.

I'm in a wet slip, but when I see a forklift driver under a boat with compound and a rag I know the dockmaster has seen something he didn't like.

Roostrs,

I kept my boat in a dry stack at one of two larger better marinas on LM during the draw down of '02 and '03. Unfortunately what you are experiencing is the norm. In addition, you may even find a nick or two along the aft strakes. I also used compound, polish and wax from time to time while on the wash rack. My only suggestion is to figure out who is the best driver, get to know him and have him handle your boat. That seemed to minimize my problems.

Good luck.

I have dry stacked the past 2 years and have not had a problem. The skids on our fork are black rubber covered by a canvas material (looks like a fire hose or similar). Moreover, I am on the 3rd story so the driver cannot really see what is going on except remotely. I should also add I tip the drivers a $10 or $20 at the beginning of the season and treat them with respect (once they know you are not an a$$hole they will go out of thier way to help you).

At Captain's Quarter's Dry Stak, they covered the forks with a tan colored product and put something on the forks so that they are angled to conform better with the contour of boat hulls. I don't notice the black marks any more.

I dry stacked for 4 yrs in two different marinas on LKN. I never had the problem descibed. My biggest frustration was the dirt that accumulated on the boat from the dusty unpaved parking lot.
