I just received my new delta anchor, and low and behold it would not retrieve in the roller used by my old CQR. It just wouldn’t fit without the tip hitting the bow. So what I did is I removed the second roller so now when the shank is pulled through, it’s pulled through at a lower angle which keeps the tip of the anchor rotated down just enough to not hit the bow. Make sense? Here are some pics to illustrate.

Here it is fully retrieved with the second roller removed to allow the shank to sit at a lower angle:

Like I said it’s close, but it doesn’t hit:

And Here you can see the roller I removed. (Bolt hole).

Anyway it works ..does anyone foresee any issues? And if so, what bow roller have others used for a Delta anchor?

Thanks!

If you don’t think it will hit it during retrieval in choppy water, and the rode won’t loosen and allow the shank to move up and down while running in rough water, it should be ok I guess but I can’t tell for sure from pics.
They make bow shields and scuff guards for situations like that, some don’t look too bad.
Mantis makes something that bolts on to the roller that holds the anchor away from the bow.
Also could move the bow roller out 1 set of holes, but then you have some cantilever and loose some strength because it would only be held on with 6 bolts instead of 8.
I went through all this when I bought my anchor, I wanted a mantis but the online template looked as though I would have that problem so I went with the Rocna

Can you put a larger roller on the front to hold it off further?

Seems like from the pictures it could hit as soon as you loosen the rode. Have you eye-balled it from the front while operating the foot switches?

DT, You can’t see it in the pics, but if his is the same as mine, and it looks like it is, the roller is v shaped to center the shank and the outside edges are right at the end of the side plates already.

Thanks for the responses guys. I have eyeballed it with the foot switches yes, and when releasing it moves forward and down before the shank rotates up ..so it clears the bow. Just by a smidgen. I think a larger roller might help it stay clear a bit more. Maybe, but it also might do the opposite and pull it up more. Maybe investing in one of those bow plates would be a good idea.

If it releases and retrieves, I would do it, that stainless anchor is a beaut

Thanks Chris but it’s not stainless. Just shiny new galvanized. I can’t get the wife to sign off on the extra cost for something that is buried at the bottom of the ocean most of the time. :)

My “V” is even deeper than that at the front so yes ..perhaps a larger thicker roller (like this one) would be something to experiment with.

Contact SR parts dept, I had same problem, it's a SPECIAL anchor, I think a KODIAK, not totally sure but it fit's PERFECT with NO modification, I had purchased same DELTA anchor from west marine and returned it.....Just an idea..... Parts dept. knew exactly what the correct anchor was... ;)

Thanks guys. Since removing the second roller the anchor has performed flawlessly all season. And we’ve been doing quite a bit of anchoring. It even self launches and retrieves and doesnt hit the bow although there is less than an inch of clearance. I do like the stainless guard and might get one regardless. They seem pretty common on the newer models and look slick IMO.
