Electronics Surgery/Upgrades

@rondds

Look at the Icom M506. Very nice radio. Only slightly larger than the 220. I think it will fit.

Kind of expensive, radio is about $325, the remote mic about $200, but you get a lot of radio. NEMA 2000, AIS receiver....

Made some good progress today.

Working on getting the lower radio panel installed and the Icom command mike jack installed.

You’re doing some nice work.
I wouldn’t mind seeing the info from my ST60 and ST 7001 auto pilot on my two 12” C125 MFD’s. Also, my RN 300 is basically useless at this point so would be nice to get rid of it and put something else in its’s place.
Since it is really shallow around here I’m thinking a stand alone depth finder of some sort to act as a backup.
My Ray 240 is networked in with the C125’s. Not sure how the previous owner did that, and why he didn’t do the same with the ST 60 and ST 7001 when he was doing it.
One of these days I have to take a look back there and see what I can see and figure out.

Finishing touches on the left hand side...

DSM300 fishfinder networked in...not sure if it's working right.

It really pretty easy....time consuming though especially getting all the old wiring out, and re attaching everything.

I’ve got to take a look back there one of these days and draw out a diagram of what’s there.
Then I need to look in to what I need to get and how to hook it all up to tie the tri data and auto pilot in to my MFD’s. The Ray 240 is already networked in with the C 125’s.

John I sent you the info on the part you would need...a seatalk to seatalkng converter part #E22158. It would probably take about an hour to do. It really is plug and play.

Same for the fishfinder, if you have one installed. I could get those part numbers for you as well

Ray240 is likely on the NEMA0183 network. Hopefully your gps coordinates are being communicated to the radio. Getting that working is a good safety feature. Wife/guest only have to hit one button to let the coast guard know where you are.

Thanks Dave. Tech is not my strong suit.
Yes, the Ray 240 is getting it’s GPS info from the C 125’s (not sure how though), and the C 125’s list the Ray 240 (as well as the HD radar) as connected equipment. It was connected that way when I got the boat. Not sure why the previous owner didn’t have the other stuff tied in back in 2014 when he had the C125’s and new radar installed..
The first thing I did when I got the boat was get an MMSI number for it and send the radio to Raymarine to have them go through it, remove the old owners MMSI and entire mine in to the 240.
They charged me about $75.00 to do it, but they also checked out the radio to make sure it was working properly (already had a brand new cord on the handset before it was shipped to them) and had the most recent software while they had it so it wasn’t a bad deal.

Nice looking install!

I put in an Icom M400BB last year when the cord on my NS100 radio fell apart. Once I got used to the different layout on the handset I've really enjoyed it. I do miss the direct entry for channel numbers from the NS100 though.

I couldn't find a good way to replace the exterior speaker for the NS100. Instead of covering it with a plate I just left it alone. Its on a lower slanted part of the dash that faces the floor so it's not noticeable.

I too would have like a direct entry handset, but I don’t use it much on the lake except for weather alerts and finding a few friends.

Having a one button distress call that I can train my wife and daughter to use is why I wanted it. There is a video on here somewhere of a person calling the coast guard for help and having no idea where they are.

I too left the old external speaker. I’d like to have both going, but the unit doesn’t allow that.

I did get the hailer working, now the wife can’t claim she can’t hear me:)

Good call on the DSC function. That video was scary. I had my Garmin unit connected to the old NS100. The wiring was done so connecting the M400BB took all of 10 minutes.

Started pulling out the old electronics, that had seen better days. Had an RL80C Pathfinder display with a 4' open array radar, DSM 300 Fishfinder Module, ST7000+ autopilot, Ray220 VFH Hailer, ST60 Tridata and a RN300 GPS. Nice package in 2001.

I'm planning the following upgrades.

1. Replace the RL80C with a Raymarine a128 (refurbished)
2. Remove Radar Scanner, RN300, and Ray220 VHF
3. Network the ST7000+ Autopilot to the MFD and Move to Dash
4. Network the DSM300 Fishfinder module to the MFD
5. Replace the Ray 220 VHF/Hailer with an Icom M400BB VHF/Hailer.
6. Add MMSI to M400BB and network into NEMA0183.
7. Network a stereo (future)
8. Put Guage data on NEMA200) network (future)

I will not be adding radar back at this time. I do not see the value of standard radar on an inland lake, but I am sold on the new Doppler technology as a huge asset on a busy inland lake. The a Series MFD's can only run Lighthouse II and as such, cannot support the Quantum 2 Radars. However, there is an easy migration path to the Axiom's, but budgetary consideration don't allow that this year:)

I would be interested in the 220 vhf if you are planning on selling it. My volume switch stopped working and I'm not quite ready to upgrade all my electronics. Thanks

I have one if you're interested. PM me.

Mine had the same trouble, I'm going to part it out if it cant be fixed. Raymarine said likely solder joint would fix it. If not I'll part out the mic and cover.

Love this thread! Upgrading electronics, VHF, and stereo are on my to-do list for next year.

A lot of awesome info here. You guys have done some really nice upgrades...
