I have been having some grief with my engine hatch actuator. Mine is the design where it is screwed to the keel stringer in between my Cat Diesels. It started making some noise so I removed it and dissembled the gearbox. Water and some rust!!!!! No damage so I cleaned it up and regreased everything. I found the seal in the barrel of the actuator used for the chrome shaft was not in great shape but I also noticed because of the extension of the 24" actuator, there is lots of side stress on this actuator. Anyway, it is working again but the problem is going to return.

I have talked to my local Searay dealer and the design was changed in 2003 but the parts catalog is not the best for those years. My understanding is the new design for mid-2000's id a new support fwd of the port engine. I have seen it in pictures and this may be the answer. Searay says the actuator is much shorter with an extension bar should you need the hatch in a more opened position.

My questions are:

  • if you have modified or upgraded your setup could you please share your experience and,
  • does this design problem have an aftermarket fix?

I would appreciate an pics or suggestions of the newer actuator mounting and the extension bar mounting. If you have a modification that works I would appreciate your input.

Thanks

Steve
