I fired up the engines this morning. The Starboard engine started ok, but had a "ringing" noise like a bell ringing.

There was a little "smoke" or maybe "steam" coming from the risers area... No real odor that's why I say maybe steam!

To me sounds like the ringing as if the starter is rattling

Any ideas?

A little steam from the risers could be condensation burning off, if so it should stop in a short period of time.

If the steam continues, look for hairline cracks on onboard side of the exhaust manifolds. water may be trickling out and boiling on contact with the cylinder head.

It happened to me last year.

Did you have any ringing noise associated? A friend suggested it sounds like a loose bolt, of so maybe the bolt holding the exhaust manifold of riser?

Thanks I'll check it out.

No ringing for me.

Could it be a bearing on one of the pulleys? Or the raw water pump itself?

or the drive plate on the transmission which at higher rpms.....stops making noise.

Actually, there was a short period that the rpm went from 1000 to 1300 and back again...would that be surging?

Found the rattling noise. It turns out a piece of the starter broke off and was rattling in contact with the flywheel.
