Here's a mystery I hope someone can help with. I was all set to enjoy a perfect day on Lake Ontario. 86 degrees, sunshine, no wind. Got the boat ready and went to start the port engine -- got nothing. No tone, no gauges, nothing. Starboard started fine so I tried the crossover (my bats are 4 years old). Not only did it not start the port, but it killed the starboard. Now nothing worked, nothing on either engine. I checked for neutral on both engines and was out of gear so I started checking breakers.
I found the main breaker on top of the port engine was tripped so I reset it and the port engine lit up! Went to start the starboard -- got nothing. Used the crossover and the starboard started, but died as soon as I let go of the crossover switch.
To eliminate things, I decided to change my batteries. I was going to do that soon anyway and I've seen a dead battery cause strange things. Swapped them out (no fun at 90 degrees by this time) and nothing changed.
Seems to me I did something when I tried to use the crossover switch to start the port when it's main breaker on top of the engine was tripped (what is the proper name for that anyway?). I must have burned out a fuse or tripped a breaker on the starboard side that is keeping it from getting it's own ground or positive. Again, it runs until you release the crossover switch.
Any ideas? Thanks for any light you can shed.
