I think it'll take more than a day to compound and buff it out, but it's still worth it to do it yourself.
The job is not so much skill as it is labor. You'll get the feel for the buffer in just a few minutes.
Do some google searches. You'll probably find plenty of information and videos that show you how to compund and polish the boat with a rotary buffer.
I wouldn't recommend going at your car with a rotary if you have no experience, but the boat gel coat is a lot more forgiving.
