What is the best substance to use as a coating on the foward hatch gasket so it won't stick and not damage the gasket? I'm afrade to use a petroleum product as it may dissolve or disintegrate it.

I'd suggest a silicone based lube, something for automotive weatherstripping should work well.

"Plumber's grease" (silicone based) works well and won't attack the seal. You can find it at Home Depot for a few bucks. Keep in mind that any "grease" could attract dirt, so you may just need to clean it off and reapply a little more often. Another option is a good quality vinyl/rubber conditioner such as 303 or Meguiar's. Aside from the attracting dirt issue, the plumber's grease will work better.

I wipe mine down with Simple green to clean it and then 303 for protection.

I make it part of my monthly maintenance to clean all rubber material and clean with a vinyl/rubber cleaner. Sun can be pretty harsh on rubber material. It takes me about 1/2 hour to clean everything.

+1 on the Plumber's grease. You will need to clean it from time to time, but it also allows the gasket to flex with the deck, thus preventing leaks.

i like to use 'Super Lube'.....it is a synthetic grease that is clear and will not run and is VERY slippery...it is a great all purpose lube that will not attack rubber or plastics...works great for sliding cabin doors also.....especially since it is clear and doesn't run onto the floor of the cockpit when you wash the boat or when it rains....
