Fresh Water leaked into cabin and into bilge

PT Barnum was right.

ETA: I had NO survey on the boat I bought 3 years ago, but with a little common sense and a modest amount of experience with both engines and RV's as well as general troubleshooting, I knew my new "toy" would be good to go.

ETA part 2:

With starter not functional, HOW did you test drive?

YOU GOT TOOK.

The starter worked at trial. But it broke after about 5 trips, major corrosion. Yes, I am learning a lot about boats now that I know what to look for and that surveyors aren’t as thorough as they ought to be. I’m also learning a lot about mechanics: They will rob you blind.

There was no water during the survey, no generator to test electronics, and the seller didn’t bring the canvas. I got half a survey but paid full price. This issue is 1 of myriad issues with some much more dire: leaking engine oil, starter corroded and not operational, moving lights not working, idle air control valve shot, anchor not working, Etc. I got a lemon of all lemons. Really frustrating.
Just curious, who found they surveyor, you or the seller. If the seller found him, I would be discussing at least my money back from surveyor or possible legal action. If he was a certified surveyor he does not want this information out there. Sorry for your troubles.

Is this the anchor locker? At the tip of the boat. There is no piping in there. I poured the fresh water into that spout to the left of the anchor locker.

I found the surveyor. Only one that did engine diagnostics and had the most reviews and highest reviews. They were also more expensive. So much for you get what you pay for. Lol. I guess it’s not that bad. I’ll learn a lot about boats with this one. Thanks

Yes, that's your anchor locker. And that fill deckplate is the correct one for fresh water. Have you tried adding any water yet to see what happens?

Lots of water under the stairs. I know seller “repaired” this control box because of a leak Under the stairs prior to the sale. Can this be causing the leak?

It's not likely, as that is the shower sump pump and isn't related to the fresh water tank. Those pumps usually seize up from not flushing them with peroxide or using bar soap instead of liquid soap in the head sink and shower. The sink and shower drains from the head run into that sump box, and then when the float on the pump lifts it pumps the water over the side.

That water is probably there from when the tank was filled and leaked out and then ran into the mid-bilge area where that sump box is. If you get the boat on plane, that water will run back to the main bilge and can be pumped out. Alternatively, you can use a shop vac to wet vac it out. You can test that sump by pouring enough water down the head sink or shower drain.

You have to look closer in the anchor locker - look at the "ceiling". The hoses either first enter the anchor locker or they come into the cabin behind a false panel by the mirror bulkhead.

As Steve mentioned, that sump box under the stairs has nothing to do with water showing up from filling the fresh water tank.

FYI... getting the boat up on plane should NOT allow any water in the cabin to go back to the engine bilge. The cabin and bilge are sealed from each other to purposefully prevent engine water (and fumes) to carry into the living area.

Thanks, and good catch Dennis. Thinking about too many different problems at once!

Having that exact year and model, the FW tank is (as others have said) under the center cushion and table storage in the v-berth. You can see the fill and vent hoses by looking in the anchor locker as Lazy Daze mentioned.

As far as ripping out the carpet, probably not necessary as long as you can wet vac up the majority of the water and get it dry. Worst case, if it sours, you can steam clean it and then get it dry.

One other question: did you pressurize the fresh water system by turning on the FW pump? If so, the leak may be coming from somewhere else. I wanted to ask as you didn't indicate that in your posts.

Pics will definitely help us help you more quickly.

Turns out my friend did turn on the fw pump. I wasn’t aware. Does this change anything?

Yes, that it does. Water could have been coming from a lot more places potentially.

One of the most common reasons for water in the mid bilge is from a shower sump pump not working. If water runs into that box and the pump doesn’t kick on, it will eventually overflow into the mid bilge and gets wicked into the carpet. The shower sump and the engine bilge pumps are wired to be on all the time, even with the battery switch off - for safety reasons.

Here’s what you need to do:

1. With the fresh water pump off, fill the fresh water tank at the bow. Inspect for any leaks.

2. If no leaks are found, turn on the fresh water pump with all fixtures off and no water running. Inspect for leaks. If the fresh water pump continues to cycle, you have water coming out of the system somewhere. The pump is a demand pump with a pressure switch that shuts it off at 45-55 psi depending on how it’s set from the manufacturer.

3. If there are still no leaks, turn one fixture on at a time. The galley and wet bar sinks (if equipped) drain directly over the side and the wet bar is aft of the cabin anyway so it is not a factor. You could have a supply line leak but you would have noticed that in step 2. If you’re this far, it’s most likely the shower sump because you will run the head faucet and that water won’t be pumped out and over the side.

If you follow that process and let us know what you find, we should be able to help you pin this down pretty easily.

It sounds to me like you filled the tank, and then a buddy turned on the water pump to pressurize the system. Then, you got the leak. So, I suspect a broken hose or leaky fitting somewhere between the pressure pump and one of the faucets.

Leak in the bilge was from the new hot water tank. One of the pipes wasn’t sealed properly and was spraying into the bilge profusely. Wasn’t able to determine the source of the cabin leak because had to turn off the pump. I assume the leak in the cabin is caused by that box under the stairs as I was told the seller was repairing a leak under there. Clearly, the seller didn’t repair it and purposely kept water off the boat for my inspection. But that is neither here nor there. I appreciate everyone’s help. The step by step trouble shooting really helped. Thanks again.

Glad you were able to make some progress! If you haven’t already done so, I’d highly recommend downloading the User Manual and Parts Manual for your 2007 240 DA from Sea Ray’s website. Go to the Owner’s page and you can find them there. The parts manual shows diagrams, locations, and part numbers for everything on your boat and can be an excellent resource.

If you have any further questions, feel free to search on the forum and post if you don’t find what you’re looking for. I’d also suggest monitoring/posting in the Official 240 Sundancer thread, and there is lots of good reading in there too on various topics.
